RaceChip is well-known for providing a variety of performance enhancements shortly after a new vehicle model has been introduced to the market. RaceChip also has a broad repertoire of modified older generation vehicles. We wanted to test it and decided on a RaceChip tuning box. Our test object is a VW Phaeton V6 tdi with 2967ccm large 3.0-liter diesel engine, which can also be found in the VW Touareg, the Audi A8 (4H), the Porsche Cayenne or the Audi A6 C6 / 4F. With us the engine hangs in an 2008er luxury liner from the glass factory in Dresden and the diesel has probably only in the Touareg even more load to transport.

ex works 239 PS & 500 NM

The 2,3 tonne Phaeton 3.0 TDI 4MOTION with standard 6-speed automatic sprints from the factory to 8 km / h in 100 seconds and the top speed is quite impressive at 237 km / h. It is currently not known whether our copy (245.000 km) still achieves these values. RaceChip now promises a big plus with three performance levels, which in the brand new RaceChip GTS can even be controlled using a mobile phone app. The basic chip, as RaceChip S, provides - according to the data sheet - additional 29 PS & 83 NM torque. Stage 2 comes under the name "RS" and promises an increase in performance of 35 PS & 101 NM torque.

We decided on the top model, the GTS, which should additionally promote 44 PS & 120 NM torque and can be conveniently controlled with the mobile phone. The Phaeton comes, at least on paper, damn close to the turbodiesel top model V10 with 313 PS & 750 NM torque. At 2405 kilograms, the curb weight of the V10 is a lot higher than that of the V6, which in our opinion is very low. With 283 PS & 620 NM you should at least be able to annoy the big V10 from now on.

real facts will follow

First of all, we would like to point out that the current article is only intended to show the problem-free installation and functioning of the RaceChip GTS Tuningbox. A performance measurement as well as reliable acceleration tests will be delivered at the given time. Since our complete equipment at the time of installation on the Food motor show was distributed. we have made only a short amateur measurement of the acceleration via mobile phone video. Of course, that does not have any meaningfulness!

The scope of delivery

the installation

The installation is really simple and goes without saying Plug & Play By itself. If you have performed a first functional test and there are no problems, it is only a small challenge to find a suitable place in the packed engine compartment of the Phaeton for permanent attachment. Of course, the device must not have any contact with hot components of the engine, it must not be attached to freely suspended cables and it must not be in the way when closing the hood. All we have done but.

APP for IOS & Android

If the RaceChip GTS is installed, the free RaceChip app (iOS or Android) can be downloaded from the App Store and the coupling can begin via Bluetooth. To do this, simply search for the GTS, connect the device to the mobile phone using the PIN provided or the barcode and then check and confirm the vehicle data. A great option is the integrated timer, which only releases the set output after a preconfigured "warm-up" phase.

GPS data & performance measurement will follow

As mentioned above in the text, we tested the relatively simple with four mobile phone videos. Since these shots, some of them shaky, have been taken without any GPS measurements and no before / after power measurements of the vehicle, they are of course useless for a real assessment of the RaceChip GTS and therefore remain uncommented at this point.

But we will soon be expanding this contribution with a test bench run and of course a measurement of the acceleration values will also be included. In addition, the vehicle will later be equipped with OBD chip tuning (the RaceChip GTS will of course be removed beforehand). And where is the difference to the tuning box? OBD II has been a standard since 1996 that is used to connect diagnostic and test devices to cars. The interface, which our VW Phaeton also has, provides access to the control electronics which, among other things, determine the performance of the vehicle. The original data or tuning data are then uploaded and downloaded again by the engine control unit and this is referred to as "chip tuning". For this we will publish a separate report.

Of course that had not been the case. Our tuning magazine has tens of thousands more tuning reports in stock. Do you want to see them all? Just click HERE and look around. Or are you especially interested in what else we have tested? Then the following excerpt determines exactly the right one or?
