The VW Rabbit Cabrio is a classic among open cars. It is based on the first Golf that was launched in North America at the time Rabbit was sold. The convertible is characterized by its distinctive roll bar design, which gives it more stability and safety. The Rabbit Cabrio was manufactured by Karmann in Germany and was available in various trim levels. And one of the very special Rabbit Convertibles belongs to Giraldo Penton from Pembroke Pines, Florida. He converted his 1989 Volkswagen Rabbit Convertible into a real eye-catcher that immediately caught the attention of the jury of the current 2023 Hot Wheels Legends Tour. The Hot Wheels Legends Tour is a competition where participants can show off their customized vehicles and the judges will decide if they have the potential to become a Hot Wheels model car.
VW Rabbit convertible
The Hot Wheels Tour has been taking place since 2018 and stops in various cities in the USA and around the world. Giraldo Penton has modified his Rabbit Cabriolet with great attention to detail since purchasing it in 2016. He gave it a new coat of Lambo Blue, which is certainly a very unusual color in the restomod scene. The aprons and mirror caps were also painted in the vehicle color to achieve a uniform look. What is outstanding for us, however, is the Golf 1 Bergcup widebody kit, which is seamlessly integrated into the body and skilfully stages the "one". It was also mixed with a Clipper body kit.
The only thing we would have done without was the blue clear glass rear lights and the blue outer main headlights, but in the end that is of course a matter of taste. As a perfect contrast to the blue Lambo paintwork, there are also many white accents. The most striking are of course the beautiful classic rims, which are special 15 inch "BBS Flip Face" rims.
Significant lowering and leather interior
Modifications to the chassis also significantly reduce the ground clearance, because Penton's rabbit sits just a few centimeters above the ground. In the interior there is a three-spoke Nardi sports steering wheel in combination with a snow-white leather interior, there is also a Pioneer head unit and numerous smaller modifications such as illuminated window cranks. Unfortunately, Hot Wheels has not published any photos of the engine compartment. That's probably because there's not that much to see under the hood, though. According to Hot Wheels, Penton has so far avoided any technical modifications under the hood, which means that the performance of the 1,8-liter four-cylinder is probably still only 90 hp.
The power comes exclusively to the front wheels and is distributed via a five-speed manual gearbox. Victory in the Miami round means the convertible will advance to one of the two semi-final rounds that will take place at the end of 2023. Hot Wheels plans to visit eight American cities and a total of 17 countries, including France and Italy, to find the next vehicle. We are excited!
