World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

The S-Class stands for the fascination of Mercedes-Benz: legendary and traditional engineering skills define the luxury segment in the automotive industry. The new S-Class can be experienced with all the senses - sight, touch, hearing and smell - and at the same time offers a multitude of innovations, for example in terms of support, protection and interaction. With innovations that focus on people, Mercedes-Benz is shaping the next generation of contemporary and individual mobility. The new S-Class uses digitalization for a car that reacts sensitively to the needs and wishes of the driver and passengers.

Luxury on a new level

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

Modern luxury reaches the next level in the interior of the S-Class. The designers have created a feel-good atmosphere with a lounge character that is characterized by elegance, high quality and lightness. With its new architecture, modern surface design and ergonomic display arrangement, the instrument panel is a highlight. But the feel-good program goes on: with a high level of driving and noise comfort and an extensive range of ENERGIZING COMFORT programs, the S-Class takes care of the well-being of its passengers. They stay fit thanks to the effective air filtering, which also signals their increased performance with the new name ENERGIZING AIR CONTROL.

E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL chassis

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is becoming more intelligent in many areas, the driving experience is on the next level. In addition to the digital innovations from MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience), among others, there are innovations that increase driving pleasure and at the same time make it even safer: These include rear-axle steering with a large steering angle and safety innovations such as the rear airbag. As a new function of PRE-SAFE® On the impulse side, the active chassis E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL can raise the body shortly before a side impact is detected (on both sides). The consistently further developed driver assistance systems are another step on the way to autonomous driving. Thanks to improved environment sensors, for example, the parking systems can now support the driver even better when maneuvering. With the integration in MBUX, the visualization reaches new dimensions.

For over 100 years: the luxury class as the embodiment of the Mercedes-Benz brand

The S-Class is the heart of the brand and stands for the fascination of Mercedes-Benz: legendary engineering and craftsmanship meet advanced digital innovation. In the S-Class, artificial intelligence is combined with experience from 135 years of automotive technology. Around 70 years ago, Mercedes-Benz laid the foundation for the model series with the 220. Since its launch in 1951 there have been more than 4 million
S-class sedans delivered to customers worldwide. The designation "S-Class" was officially introduced in 1972 with the 116 series. The S-Class sedan has been particularly popular in China, the USA, South Korea and Germany over the past 10 years. In total, more than 500.000 S-Class sedans have been sold since the generation that is now being phased out.

The loyalty rate is particularly high with this series. Around 80 percent of customers in Western Europe who have previously driven an S-Class choose a vehicle from Mercedes-Benz again. In the US it's more than 70 percent. Worldwide, the S-Class sedan is predominantly sold with a long wheelbase: around 9 out of 10 customers choose the long version of the S-Class sedan.

MBUX: a new dimension in personalization and interaction

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

In recent years no other innovation has simplified the operation of a Mercedes-Benz as radically as MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience). The second generation of this adaptive system presented in 2018 is being launched in the new S-Class. The interior is becoming even more digital and intelligent, because hardware and software have made a big leap: On the up to five large screens, some with OLED technology, brilliant views make it easier to control vehicle and comfort functions. The options for personalization and intuitive operation have become much more extensive. This applies to the rear, but also to the driver: for example, the new 3D driver display enables spatial scene perception through eye tracking for the first time at the push of a button. A real depth effect is achieved without having to wear special 3D glasses.

Two different head-up displays (HUD) are available on request. The larger HUD offers augmented reality (AR) content. During navigation, for example, animated turn arrows are placed virtually and precisely over the roadway. With the assistance functions, information is displayed, for example on the Active Distance Assistant. The image is virtually at a distance of about 10 meters. The display area corresponds to a monitor with a diagonal of 77 inches.

The “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant is even more capable of dialogue and learning by activating online services in the Mercedes me app. Furthermore, certain actions can also be triggered without the activation term “Hey Mercedes”. This includes answering a phone call. “Hey Mercedes” now also explains vehicle functions and answers questions about general knowledge. In the S-Class, the voice assistant can also be operated from the rear.

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

With the help of cameras in the overhead control unit and learning algorithms, the MBUX interior assistant now recognizes numerous different operating requests. He interprets the direction of the head, hand movements and body language and reacts with the corresponding vehicle functions. The MBUX interior assistant not only offers ease of use, but also provides support in terms of security. It gives the driver a message before the start of the journey if the camera has detected a child seat on the front passenger seat but the seat belt is not fastened there.

With the MBUX Smart Home function, the S-Class is now also a control center for the home: Mobile intelligence enables maximum operating convenience from a distance. Because many people's homes are getting smarter and smarter. Under the umbrella term “Smart Home”, WLAN and sensors make the home communicative: temperature and lighting, shutters and electrical devices can be monitored and switched remotely. Motion detectors and window contacts provide information about desired or undesired visitors.

The dimensional concept and the interior design: spacious ambience with lounge character

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

It has always been easy to travel and work in an S-Class. With the new generation of vehicles, the interior has completely developed into a “third place”, a refuge between home and work. Almost all comfort dimensions of both variants, the S-Class with short and long wheelbase, on the front and rear seats have been improved. The feeling of space is correspondingly generous. The desired harmony between digital and analog luxury has resulted in a revolutionary interior design with associations with elements from interior architecture and yacht design. The sculpture consisting of the dashboard, center console and armrests seems to float over a spacious landscape. The consistent reduction in the number of controls emphasizes the minimalist appearance of the interior. A fine step between the upper part of the instrument panel and the large decorative part divides the volume and creates horizontal width.

In addition to the up to five screens, the highlights include the large trim parts in the dashboard and in the rear (with the comfort seat variant). They flow around the passengers and represent the consistent further development of the wrap-around effect. A particularly attractive design for the trim is open-pored wood veneer, which is traversed by fine, contoured inlays made of real aluminum. The flat center nozzles with their four-person signature and horizontally mounted gondolas are new design elements. Two narrow, vertical side vents each form the formal end of the instrument panel.

Driver and central displays offer a holistic, aesthetic experience. The appearance of the screens can be customized with a total of four display styles (subtle, sporty, exclusive, classic) and three modes (navigation, assistance, service).

The seats: a lot of high-tech for maximum comfort on long journeys

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

The seats invite you to sit down and relax. The flowing, three-dimensional layer design theme gives them an optical lightness. The different processing leads to different characters. The flowing longitudinal pipes in the Lugano leather look more elegant and avant-garde and the progressive diamond quilting in the nappa and exclusive nappa leather is classically expressive.

Up to 19 motors on the front seats help you sit comfortably - a number that refers to the complexity of the technology installed in the seats. But comfort is not enough: the seats also play a central role when it comes to safety. And, of course, also in terms of luxurious well-being: all seats available in the S-Class have been awarded the AGR seal of the Good Sitting campaign.

There are ten different massage programs in the new S-Class. You use the vibration motors and can increase the effect of the relaxing massage using the hot stone principle with heat. For this purpose, the seat heating is combined with the inflatable air chambers of the active multicontour seats. The air bubbles are now closer to the seat surface and are therefore even easier to control and feel.

Five different rear seat variants make it possible to configure the rear seat area of the S-Class more as a work or resting place. A new feature is a heated additional cushion for the headrest, which is available for the two electrically adjustable rear seats. The adjustment range and angle of the passenger seat in the chauffeur configuration and the reclining seat behind it have been improved many times.

The ENERGIZING Comfort offers: travel comfortably and stay fit

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

The holistic "Fit & Healthy" approach of ENERGIZING Comfort enables the different comfort systems to be experienced at the touch of a button or by voice command and bundles them in programs to create worlds of experience. At the same time, a suitable atmosphere is created in the interior - for example, vitalizing on monotonous stretches and relaxing when stress levels are high. The ENERGIZING COACH even suggests a suitable vitalization or wellness program based on vehicle and trip information. If the driver wears a suitable wearable, the information on sleep quality and stress level is also incorporated into his intelligent algorithm.

In the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has fundamentally developed the ENERGIZING comfort control. Innovations such as a massage based on vibration motors in the seat cushion and the structure-borne sound transmission of the Burmester® High-end 4D surround sound systems are integrated. So deep tones can be experienced. The direct reproduction of the structure-borne noise in the seats adds another level to the three-dimensional listening experience
4D sound, inspired by the singing bowl massage. The perceptible intensity of the sound can be set individually for each seat. The music has an even more emotional effect due to the tangible component. For this purpose, two structure-borne sound converters (exciters) are integrated into the backrest of each seat.

Automated driving and driver assistance systems: even more support for the driver

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

Home office will soon be mobile - also for people behind the wheel. At least when you are driving a vehicle with a star: Mercedes-Benz wants to technically implement the safe operation of a highly automated S-Class and meet the demanding legal requirements for a so-called Level 3 system. It is expected that from the second half of 2021 the S-Class with the new DRIVE PILOT will be able to drive highly automated when there is high traffic or traffic jams on suitable sections of the motorway in Germany. This relieves the driver, enables him to do sideline activities such as surfing the Internet or processing e-mails in the in-car office and thus saves the driver time.

In the new S-Class, Mercedes-Benz has come a great deal closer to the vision of accident-free driving. The driver is supported by numerous new or expanded driver assistance systems. So he can drive comfortably and safely in everyday situations through relief. In the event of danger, the systems help him to react appropriately to an impending collision. The functionality of the systems can be experienced through a new display concept in the driver's display.

Thanks to more powerful environment sensors, the parking systems can better support the driver when maneuvering. The integration in MBUX makes the operation more intuitive and faster. The optional rear-axle steering is integrated into the parking assistants, and the calculation of the lanes (trajectories) is adjusted accordingly. Emergency braking functions are used in particular to protect other road users.

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

With the Remote Parking Assistant, the driver can park the vehicle in and out of the parking space using a smartphone. Operation has been simplified considerably. With the preparation for the INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT, the S-Class is prepared for Automated Valet Parking (AVP, SAE level 4). Together with the required special equipment and the corresponding connect service (depending on the country), the new S-Class has the technology on board to park in and out of parking garages equipped with AVP infrastructure fully automatically and without a driver, provided that national laws allow such operation.

The chassis systems: more manageable and dynamic with rear-axle steering

Innovative chassis systems ensure an impressive driving experience in the new S-Class. The rear axle steering (special equipment) with a steering angle of up to 10 ° increases the maneuverability in the city to the level of a compact car. The turning circle of the S-Class is reduced by up to two meters with rear-axle steering.

The optional, fully active suspension E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL on a 48-V basis offers a unique synthesis of comfort and agility and also additional protection in the event of a side impact. The AIRMATIC air suspension with continuous adjustable damping ADS + is standard. Close networking of all chassis and control systems brings a high level of stability and safety. Now Mercedes-Benz is strengthening it with a new PRE-SAFE function® Impulse side measures in the pre-accident phase: In the event of an impending side impact, the E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL suspension can raise the body by up to 80 millimeters within a few tenths of a second. The result is a relief of the door structures, since the sill can take over a larger part of the load transfer due to the elevated position. This can reduce the deformations of the passenger compartment and the associated stress on the occupants. Radar sensors are used to detect a potential side crash.

The exterior design: perfect proportions for a classic appearance

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

With the short overhang at the front, the long wheelbase and a balanced overhang at the rear, the S-Class is designed as a classic sedan with perfect proportions. The wide track and the flush wheels with modern designs make the vehicle appear muscular. On the side, the so-called character lines have been significantly reduced. Elaborately modeled surfaces with their sculpting provide a special play of light. The front impresses with its status-defining radiator grille.

The headlights define the face of the vehicle. They have the three-point daytime running light signet typical of the S-Class, but are flatter and overall smaller. The door handles (special equipment) that are flush with the doors have been completely redeveloped. They extend electrically when the driver approaches or is swiped over the outer surface of the door handle. Keyless access is via KEYLESS-GO.

The visual dynamics of the vehicle continue in the rear. Thanks to their precisely designed interior with a high level of detail and various, partly animated functions, the rear lights contribute to the high quality impression of the vehicle. This makes the new S-Class unmistakable in its day and night design.

The light: with innovative digital technology outside and inside

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

The DIGITAL LIGHT special equipment is being used for the first time in mass production at Mercedes-Benz. It enables completely new assistance functions:

  • Warning of detected construction sites through the projection of an excavator symbol on the roadway
  • Warning and marking by a spotlight on detected pedestrians at the edge of the road
  • Indication of traffic lights, stop signs or no entry by projecting a warning symbol onto the lane
  • Support on narrow roadways (construction site) by projecting guide markings onto the roadway.

DIGITAL LIGHT has a light module in each headlight with three extremely bright LEDs, whose light is refracted and directed with the help of 1,3 million micro-mirrors. The resolution per vehicle is therefore over 2,6 million pixels. This enables precise light distribution. The high-beam assistant is over 100 times more accurate than the 84-pixel light when it comes to fading out oncoming traffic or traffic signs. The light-dark boundaries and the light distribution of all other adaptive light functions are also displayed with significantly improved precision, which optimizes the illumination in fog light, motorway light or city light, for example.

Thanks to LED technology, the new S-Class also makes a leap in development when it comes to lighting the interior: Mercedes-Benz has implemented interactive lighting for the first time. The active ambient lighting (special equipment) is integrated into the driver assistance systems and can visually support their warnings. In addition, a corresponding feedback is possible with comfort systems. This applies to the air conditioning or the “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant.

Aerodynamics: extensive flow simulations in the early development phase

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

With a cw-Value of 0,22 or more, the S-Class is one of the most aerodynamically efficient vehicles at all and especially in the luxury sedan segment. Although the frontal area (A) of the new S-Class has increased slightly to 2,5 m², the air resistance has been reduced again compared to the predecessor. The product of cw and A is 0,56 m² and is thus 200 cm² lower than its predecessor after the last facelift. Aerodynamic measures on the body, underbody and add-on parts enable it to perform well in wind tunnels and real traffic. In an early development phase, extensive flow simulations were carried out on high-performance computer clusters.

The S-Class has also improved its aeroacoustics. The previous generation already offered a very high level of noise comfort in the interior. The new model is even quieter. The high rigidity of the body was the basis for the excellent noise and vibration comfort. There was also a lot of fine-tuning. For example, the openings in the cable sleeves on the front wall are sealed twice. In order to achieve the engine sound, which can be perceived as cultivated and unobtrusive in the interior, the bulkhead insulation has been increased up to the side area of the A-pillar and the floor area. For the first time, Mercedes-Benz is also using acoustic foams in selected body-in-white profiles in large-scale production.

The drive: more electrification, more efficiency

Six-cylinder in-line engines as petrol and diesel in various output levels mark the beginning of the engines for the new S-Class. A V8 engine with an integrated starter generator (ISG) and 48-volt electrical system will soon be available. A plug-in hybrid with a purely electric range of around 2021 kilometers will follow in 100.

The body and accident prevention: new frontal airbags for the rear passengers

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

Intelligent bodyshell concepts and innovations in the restraint systems underpin the pioneering role of the S-Class in passive safety. The new aluminum hybrid bodyshell with an aluminum content of over 50 percent meets many requirements: high crash safety, lower weight and high body rigidity for excellent driving behavior with the best noise and vibration comfort.

In 2019, in the ESF 2019 experimental safety vehicle, Mercedes-Benz demonstrated the ideas that the company's safety experts are working on. Among the more than 20 innovations were near-series developments such as the rear airbag, which is now available as an option in the S-Class. The frontal airbag for the rear seat unfolds particularly gently due to its innovative design with a tube-like structure. In the event of a serious frontal collision, the rear airbag can significantly reduce the stress levels on the head and neck of the outer rear passengers who are buckled up.

The new center airbag, on the other hand, positions itself between the driver and front passenger depending on the direction of the impact, the severity of the accident and the occupancy status in the event of a severe side impact, and can thus reduce the risk of mutual head contact. The center airbag is integrated in the center of the vehicle in the back of the driver's seat.

Sustainability: environmentally friendly development

World premiere - 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class (W223)!

In the S-Class, components with a total weight of over 98 kg made from resource-saving materials are used. The number of components that contain recyclates reaches 120 - more than twice as many as in the predecessor. Another 40 kg come from renewable raw materials. The process of environmentally friendly development is firmly anchored in vehicle development with specific goals. The environmental aspects are already taken into account in the conception phase.

The floor coverings were converted to a new recycled yarn. This yarn, brand name Econyl®, is made of regenerated nylon. It is made by recovering nylon waste that is destined for landfill, such as old fishing nets, scraps of cloth from mills and carpeting. These are collected and transformed into a new yarn that has the same properties as nylon made from a new raw material. The recycling process saves CO2 compared to a new product. At the same time, Mercedes-Benz can use it to close material cycles.

The history: the benchmark in the luxury class for decades

The S-Class from Mercedes-Benz has a long tradition that goes back to the beginnings of the Mercedes brand at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then, every model has shaped the automotive development of its era. Long before the official designation of the S-Class, upper-class and luxury-class vehicles were the focus of the Stuttgart brand's program, which has always stood for luxury, comfort, safety and lifestyle. The continuous ancestral line of the S-Class begins with the 220 (W 187) from 1951. The designation “S-Class” is officially introduced in 1972 with the 116 series.
