Ford Is Working With Auto Insurance On New Billing!

Working from home has become the norm for many of us, and it is expected that a significant number of people will work at least partially from home in the future. Insurance products that use the actual distance traveled as the basis of the insurance premium instead of projected flat-rate kilometers (“Pay By The Mile”), often rely on the installation of a plug-in device that records the distance traveled. For Ford customers who would like to use offers such as the one from “By Miles”, the data required for this is instead sent directly from the on-board FordPass Connect modem¹ transmitted. This means that no external hardware or software is required.

The (British) vehicle owners can of course decide who they want to share vehicle data with and for what purposes. If you want to use the “By Miles” offer, you have to register and accept an input request on the vehicle display to activate the “Transmission of distance data” function via the FordPass Connect Modem - only then will the relevant data be released and transmitted.

We want to support the new needs of the many people who own a car and work from home, ”says Mark Harvey, Director, Enterprise Connectivity, Ford of Europe. "In cooperation with the company 'By Miles' we want to use networked vehicle data to make an expanded range of innovative products and services available to our customers".

“The insurance industry has to adapt to changing market conditions. Whatever the new normal will look like in the future, it is already clear today that the needs of our customers are changing. People want fairer, more flexible insurance that reflects the realities of their lives, ”said James Blackham, CEO and Founder of By Miles. "We are pleased that our Pay By The Mile approach will offer Ford vehicle owners a networked alternative to traditional motor insurance".

The collaboration with “By Miles”, which will start in the UK later this year, is one of the first of several partnerships that Ford is planning in European markets and which will only be made possible by Ford's connected vehicle technology.

Last year, Ford made a number of connected vehicle services available free of charge to customers across Europe. These include Ford Power-Up software updates, which this year are already supplying hundreds of thousands of connected Ford vehicles with OTA downloads (Over The Air) so that customers can benefit from further developments in the software area. By 2028, it is estimated that 33 million Ford vehicles worldwide will be able to receive such performance and quality updates.

This also includes completely new functions such as the recently made available SecuriAlert. It is a security system connected to the vehicle owner's smartphone. After activation, SecuriAlert sends a notification to the vehicle owner's smartphone as soon as the system identifies an unusual process, such as attempting to open the vehicle doors. This gives customers a good feeling of security even when the car has been parked out of sight or hearing.
