(ADAC SE) E-bikes are now becoming more popular than non-motorized bikes. Black Week, Advent and Christmas also fuel interest in the trendy two-wheelers. And the winter months do not generally force you out of the saddle. Rather, the often mild temperatures even in December, January and February attract people to continue using the e-bike for everyday trips. But even when it gets cold and there is snow, you don't have to dismount immediately. If you behave correctly when handling the material, especially the heart of the e-bike, the battery, there are no limits to emission-free movement. Hibernate, continue and if so, how? ADAC e-Ride has these tips for e-bike riders and those interested in e-bike:

How does the e-bike winter correctly?
How is the battery stored?

  • Keep the battery warm and charge it regularly
  • Clean and maintain paintwork and (metal) components

Clean the e-bike and reduce the air pressure a little. If the battery is stored for a longer period, it should have a remaining capacity of between 30 and 60 percent and be stored at approx. 10-15 degrees. In the operating instructions, manufacturer-specific instructions may have to be observed, also in order not to jeopardize the guarantee. Check the charge status regularly.

Correct equipment when driving in winter?

The keyword here is: onion principle. Instead of a very warm and thick jacket, it is better to put on several layers on top of each other. Rain pants are also a good choice. So the outfit of the day still looks presentable even after driving through slush. If you are outside for a long time, you can use so-called heat pads to keep sensitive areas warm close to your body.

It is also important to place reflectors correctly, as fluorescent material is most effective when worn on moving parts of the body. Shoe covers, stockings, and leg warmers are best because they move up and down with the pedal, increasing visibility on the road. A well-fitting bicycle helmet, which should also be equipped with reflectors, is absolutely essential.

What do you have to pay attention to in particular with the e-bike battery?

Low temperatures have a negative effect on the performance of the battery. If possible, only insert the battery into the e-bike shortly before driving. Even if the battery is not used for a short time, remove the battery and store it at room temperature. Special insulation that can be easily slipped over the attached battery helps during the journey (so-called tubes for batteries).

Are there winter tires for e-bikes?

It doesn't have to be spike tires, but a winter-proof profile and an appropriate rubber compound are basic requirements in winter conditions.

E-bike care in winter: should you wash?

In order for the e-bike to get through the winter reliably, maintenance in the cold months should be at the top of the agenda. Because rain, dirt and salt on the streets promote corrosion and can really damage a bike. Spray wax protects paintwork and metal parts, contact spray displaces moisture on electrical connections, such as the contacts of the battery. Do not forget the chain when caring for it: it must be cleaned regularly and oiled with chain spray, for example.

With the e-bike to work in winter: no shelter - what to do?

A heated bicycle garage is ideal, of course, while a shelter with a roof and windbreak is the second best alternative. When attached to a tree or a traffic sign, moisture and cold nibble at the substance. The plastic bag over the saddle alone is of little help.

Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
