2023 Honda CMX1100 Rebel - now with even more technology!

The Hondas CMX1100T Rebel, a new touring version additionally equipped with a distinctive half-fairing and panniers, positions itself at the top of the Rebel family for 2023. The standard variant CMX1100 Rebel, which combines casual relaxation and high-capacity bobber action, is even more attractive with the new Iridium Gray Metallic paintwork. The characterful Bigtwin bike with a displacement of 1.084 ccm shines with pulsating running culture, crisp traction and a top electronics package. Safety-enhancing HSTC traction control, cruise control and three driving modes are on board. The chassis shines with a cartridge front fork and stereo shock absorbers with expansion tank. A disc brake with a radially mounted four-piston caliper brakes the front wheel. LED lighting technology and an LCD cockpit display complete the equipment. Honda's unique Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) is available as an option on both models.

2023 Honda CMX1100 Rebel

Since 2, the Honda CMX500 Rebel, which can be used for A2017 driving licences, has combined tradition with modern technology in a refreshing way. Younger riders and beginners in particular are enthusiastic about this bike because it is far more than just a means of transport. Rather, it stands for an open-hearted lifestyle, as a statement of independence and joie de vivre, as an expression of one's very own identity. The fusion of the bobber look and modern elements made the Rebel very popular right from the start. And the success turns out to be lasting: in 2021, the CMX500 was the best-selling machine in the custom bike segment in Europe. With good reason: the Honda Rebel is visually unique, inexpensive, easy to drive, absolutely suitable for everyday use and offers a wide range of options for individual design.

There's always room for improvement, so for the 2021 season Honda followed up with the larger displacement CMX1100 Rebel, which goes one step further and appeals to a different clientele - big bike enthusiasts who want more displacement and more power and are looking for something special to go with it stands out from the crowd. Technically, the high-capacity Rebel remains unchanged for the 2023 vintage, but the new color Iridium Gray Metallic underlines the aesthetics again in a fascinating way. In addition, the CMX1100T Rebel is another variant designed for touring, which is intended to appeal to bikers who want to follow the lure of distant destinations and longer tours a bit more comfortably with an expressive cruiser with a large displacement.

Model overview

The CMX1100 Rebel promises twice as much driving fun, because it is equally suitable for leisurely and relaxed jaunts as it is for exciting trips on winding roads. Riders transitioning from smaller bikes will appreciate the moderate weight and low seat height (just 700mm). Experienced drivers also recognize the handling potential of the chassis, which impresses with a torsion-resistant tubular steel frame, high-quality suspension elements and top brakes. The 1.084 ccm parallel twin, widely known from the CRF1100L Africa Twin, provides plenty of pressure in the lower and middle speed range thanks to a purposefully revised tuning, and the exhaust system also provides a pleasant sound note.

The control of the engine management via the electronic throttle grip (throttle by wire) enables modern assistance programs. Three standard driving modes (Standard, Rain, Sport) are available and can be adjusted to the driving conditions or mood of the driver using a freely configurable user mode. The power development of the engine, the strength of the engine brake, the traction control and the wheelie control as well as the shifting behavior of the optional dual clutch transmission (DCT) can be influenced. Cruise control is also part of the standard equipment.

As a modern cruiser in the 21st century, the CMX1100 Rebel also regulates the question of style for casual locomotion and an impressively powerful appearance in an exciting new way: Plenty of power and torque from a modern twin are paired with a simple, muscular, functional design, a low seating position and steel fenders over fat tires. The round headlight mixes old school looks with new school LED tech and harmonises perfectly with the handsome LCD round instrument panel in the cockpit. A USB-C charging socket for charging smart communication devices is of course on board. For the 2023 model year, Honda's custom cruiser family is complemented with a special touring version, the CMX1100T Rebel. This bike, which is only available in the color Gunmetal Black Metallic, also has a striking half fairing and a hard case side case set - for extended wind protection and increased luggage capacity, so that excursions can be completed even more comfortably.

The 2023 standard CMX1100 Rebel is available in two colors:

  • Iridium Gray Metallic **NEW**
  • Gunmetal Black Metallic

Styling & equipment

2023 Honda CMX1100 Rebel - now with even more technology!

  • Bobber style, muscular and casual.
  • LED lighting technology, headlights with four integrated lenses.
  • Seat lock operated via ignition key, underneath there is a USB-C charging socket.
  • Cruise control as standard.
  • New touring variant CMX1100T with half fairing and hard case side cases.

The typical look of the CMX1100 Rebel was created in the design studio of Honda USA, which already designed the CMX500 Rebel. The bike looks provocatively stretched and low, almost lascivious. Sleek bodywork and an arched tank combine minimalist presence with muscular proportions. The result is an eye candy on wheels. Both the front and rear fenders are made of 1 mm thick sheet steel and are fitted with aluminum brackets. Wherever you look, loving details underline the visual appearance. The headlight with a diameter of 175 mm convinces with a classic shape, but houses four LED lenses for a characteristic signature. The indicators with a diameter of 55 mm also have a classic look. The oval LED rear light, on the other hand, has a modern design and harmonises harmoniously with the other Rebel details.

The driver's seat allows a secure hold even during powerful acceleration and is very comfortable. The Rebel is also suitable for passenger use; the rear seat cushion can be removed and reinstalled quickly and easily. Under the seat there is a storage compartment with a volume of three liters, which is equipped with a USB-C charging socket. All information can be easily read from the central LCD round instrument in the cockpit. The ignition lock is located on the left of the frame, with which the seat can also be unlocked and removed by turning the ignition key. The butted handlebar is attached to the upper fork bridge with sizeable risers. The riding modes and the optional dual-clutch transmission can be controlled via the switch unit on the left of the handlebars. Cruise control is standard on board for longer stretches on the motorway.

New to the 2023 model range is the CMX1100T Rebel, available exclusively in Gunmetal Black Metallic, which is also equipped with a half fairing and hardcase side cases. This variant is intended for riders who would rather protect themselves from the wind (rather than hug it) and appreciate additional luggage capacity on their tours. The stylistically appealing half-fairing is mounted on the fork rather than the frame. The luggage swallowers (16 liters on the right and 19 liters on the left) with hinged lids fit perfectly into the Rebel ensemble.

Motor

  • 1084 cm parallel twin3
  • Powerful performance with character, top drivability.
  • Tthrottle by wire throttle control and pleasant exhaust sound.

The 1.084 cm3 The Rebel 8's SOHC 1100-valve parallel twin is based on the CRF1100L Africa Twin engine, which has been specifically redesigned to meet the needs of a cruiser. The peak output of 87 hp (64 kW) at 7.000 rpm and 98 Nm maximum torque at 4.750 rpm ensure an extremely confident character. The adapted centrifugal mass of the crankshaft allows for perfect response at low speeds and brilliantly powerful pulling power. The compact dimensions of the motor are particularly noticeable. Thanks to the concept with Unicam valve train and semi-dry sump oil pan, the weight distribution was optimal. In conjunction with the frame construction, a low center of gravity is achieved with maximum ground clearance. Furthermore, the control times, the valve lift and the exhaust system have been revised and adjusted. The crankshaft, offset by 270°, and the corresponding ignition interval help the 1100 twin to achieve pulsating running characteristics.

The engine is controlled by an electronic throttle (Throttle by Wire), has PGM-FI fuel injection and a 7-liter airbox. The exhaust sound contributes to driving pleasure. The Rebel sounds bassy below 4.000 revs, but power and presence gain with increasing revs. The water pump is integrated in the vertically split crankcase. The versions with and without DCT have the same crankcase. Externally, these differ only slightly. Secondary vibrations are neutralized by the reciprocal movement of the pistons, while two balancer shafts cancel out the primary inertial forces. The water and oil pumps are driven by the balancer shafts. A crankshaft pulse sensor enables misfire detection, while LAF (Linear Air Flow) sensors measure the air/fuel mixture ratio in the intake tract. Both are important for compliance with the Euro 5 standard.

Engine electronics

  • Electronic throttle-by-wire throttle control.
  • 3 driving modes (Standard, Rain, Sport) plus configurable user mode.
  • Three-level HSTC traction control and wheelie control.

The electronically controlled throttle grip (Throttle by Wire) controls the power development and the character of the engine, at the same time the data determined via the HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) and the integrated Wheelie Control are taken into account and taken into account if necessary. The three driving modes Standard, Sport and Rain cover a wide range of operating conditions. The mode is selected using the switch unit on the left of the handlebar. A message in the display indicates that the traction control is activated.

  • STANDARD offers a medium setting for power delivery, traction control, engine braking and wheelie control and ensures relaxed driving at medium revs and speeds.
  • SPORTS delivers more direct, responsive power delivery, full engine braking plus wheelie control and low-level traction control, ideal for maximizing performance.
  • RAIN reduces the power development of the engine and the engine brake. In addition, Wheelie Control and traction control regulate at the highest level, for relaxed driving and additional safety on wet or slippery roads.
  • The USER Mode allows individual selection of all parameters. Once set, the USER setting is automatically saved so there is no need to reconfigure it each time the ignition is switched on.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)

  • Three driving modes (standard, rain, sport) plus freely configurable user mode.
  • 3-stage traction control (HSTC) with integrated wheelie control.

Honda has already sold more than 200.000 motorcycles with dual clutch transmissions (DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission) in Europe. In 2010 the system debuted in the VFR1200F. The dual-clutch transmission makes driving easier by automatically changing gears. The electronic-hydraulic control also takes care of the metered actuation of the clutch for moving off. That's why there is no clutch lever on Honda motorcycles with DCT. Simply twisting the throttle after a riding mode has been activated is enough to set off. The simple operation quickly becomes a pleasant matter of course for users, which they are reluctant to do without.

Technically, the DCT system uses two clutches: one for starting and for gears one, three and five, the other for second, fourth and sixth gear. Each clutch is controlled by an electronic-hydraulic circuit. With automated shifting, the system selects the next gear using the currently open clutch. While this closes, the other opens at the same time - so that the newly selected gear can engage without any interruption in traction. The DCT system basically offers two operating modes.

On the one hand, the automatic setting (AT for Automatic Transmission) with pre-programmed shift patterns, which constantly monitors the speed, the selected gear and the engine speed in order to automatically initiate the optimal shifting process. On the other hand, the manual operating mode (MT for manual transmission) for targeted gear changes using the shift paddles on the left handlebar fitting. Controlled via the electronic throttle grip, the automated DCT shift patterns are linked to the three riding modes. In mode STANDARD the DCT shift pattern strikes a balance between relaxed high-gear cruising at low speeds and full-throttle engagement in low gears.

  • RAIN shifts into higher gears more quickly for an extremely smooth ride.
  • SPORTS keeps the lower gears longer and also the revs up longer before upshifting. More engine braking is achieved when downshifting at higher engine speeds.
  • The USER Mode allows the rider to adopt one of the three DCT shift patterns for the riding modes as well, based on preference.

Suspension

  • The tubular steel frame characterizes the Rebel styling.
  • Finely balanced steering geometry for stability and easy handling.
  • 43mm fork and stereo shock absorber with reservoir, both with adjustable spring preload
  • At the front, a floating brake disc with a diameter of 330 mm and a radial four-piston caliper.
  • 130/70-B18 front tires and 180/65-B16 rear tires

The tubular steel frame of the big Rebel is based on the puristic design of the 500 sister, including the typical diagonally ascending lines. The tank sits above the main pipes, which are of course larger at 35mm in diameter than on the CMX500 Rebel. The swing arm with a tube diameter of 50,8 mm also has a comparable look. The wheelbase is 1.520 mm with a trail of 110 mm. In addition to the right look, this data also allows stability, precision and easy handling. Wet weight is 223 kg for the 1100 Rebel with conventional manual transmission and 233 kg for the version with DCT. The seat height is a comfortable 700 mm. The handlebars, seat and mid-mounted footpegs ensure that the rider sits extremely comfortably and upright.

The overall geometry allows a generous lean angle of 35° on each side, which means that nothing stands in the way of winding exits. The 43 mm cartridge fork features black lower tubes and titanium oxide coated stanchions. The rear shock absorbers have reservoirs. Both the fork and the shock absorbers are adjustable in spring preload. Braking power is transmitted up front via a radially mounted monobloc four-piston caliper, which grips a 330mm floating disc. At the rear there is a single-piston caliper with a 256 mm disc. The 1100 Rebel naturally has ABS. The easy-care cast aluminum wheels have tires measuring 130/70-B18 at the front and 180/65-B16 at the rear.
