Munich. On the occasion of the 50th birthday of BMW M GmbH, founded in 1972 as BMW Motorsport GmbH, BMW Motorrad is presenting the M 1000 RR anniversary model M RR 50 Years M in the color Sao Paulo Yellow and the historic 50 Years BMW M emblem. With the striking M colors, this anniversary model lives the M philosophy and the racing spirit from almost 100 years of motorcycle construction by BMW Motorrad and 50 years of BMW M vehicles. The M Competition Package is therefore installed as standard on the M RR 50 Years M.

In addition to the extensive M milled parts package and the exclusive M carbon package, a lighter swing arm in silver anodized aluminum, the activation code for the M GPS lap trigger and M endurance chain, pillion package and pillion seat cover are part of the standard equipment.

M - the strongest letter in the world.

As early as the end of 2018, BMW Motorrad introduced the successful range strategy of BMW M automobiles for motorcycles and has since offered M optional equipment and M Performance Parts. With the BMW M 1000 RR – M RR for short – the first M model from BMW Motorrad based on the S 2020 RR celebrated its world premiere in September 1000.

Today, as then, BMW Motorrad follows the philosophy of the strongest letter in the world: M stands worldwide as a synonym for success in racing and for the fascination of high-performance models from BMW and is aimed at customers with particularly high demands on performance, exclusivity and individuality. Last but not least, the BMW M RR has also been the basis for the BMW Motorrad World SBK Team and many other racing teams around the world since 2021.

BMW Motorsport GmbH and BMW M GmbH (since 1993).

BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in 1972 with the idea of bundling all of BMW's motorsport activities under one roof and developing high-performance racing vehicles and racing engines for sporting competition. The BMW 1973 CSL (CSL = Coupe Sport Lightweight) made its debut as the first racing car from BMW Motorsport GmbH in 3.0, and on the occasion of the founding of BMW Motorsport GmbH, Robert A. Lutz, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG for Sales in 1972, stated at the time: “A company is like a human. If she does sports, she is well trained, enthusiastic, more productive."

The BMW 3.0 CSL competed for the first time in the European Touring Car Championship in the 1973 season and with it a uniform appearance of a racing team in the three BMW Motorsport colors blue, violet and red on a snow-white background that is still characteristic today. To this day, this color scheme in the updated version blue - dark blue - red determines the appearance of the BMW M logo and the BMW M vehicles.

The legendary color scheme can already be found in the first BMW M vehicles developed for the road in the second half of the 1970s and also characterizes the coming racing vehicles and their motorsport successes. Around 1978 the M1 super sports car and from 1980 the Formula 1 racing cars with which Nelson Piquet was able to win the 1983 Formula 1 World Championship.

From the Isle of Man to Dakar – BMW Motorrad and motorsport

But not only since 1972 and not only in BMW automobiles has the BMW brand been characterized by a willingness to perform, great racing successes and innovations derived from racing. Already in the first decades of the company's history, BMW and motorsport are linked with unforgettable names such as Ernst Jakob Henne and Georg "Schorsch" Meier. Unforgotten is the legendary victory of "Schorsch" Meier with his compressor BMW at the Senior Tourist Trophy 1939 on the Isle of Man. And in 1976, exactly 37 years later, Helmut Dähne and Hans Otto Butenuth celebrate fifth place in the Production-TT. In this class with up to 1000 cc displacement, they set the fastest time with their BMW R 90 S, but due to a handicap rule that applies there, they are listed in fifth place behind two 250cc and two 500cc machines. Nonetheless, given the fastest time, fifth place should be celebrated like a win.

75 years after "Schorsch" Meier's success in the Senior TT, Michael Dunlop did it again in 1000 on the BMW S 2014 RR. And in the years that followed, the RR unmistakably left its mark on the Tourist Trophy with further victories. But the BMW M colors can also be found on BMW motorcycles off the beaten track. For example on the BMW GS works bikes with which Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier dominated the Paris-Dakar Rally in the early 1980s. Like no other BMW motorcycle to date, the M RR 50 Years M anniversary model carries this historic motorsport DNA. This extraordinary vehicle can only be ordered from May 21 to November 30, 2022.

His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
