The BMW R 18 was first launched in September 2020, followed by the R 18 Classic in spring 2021. Then, in the autumn of the same year, came the R 18 B, also known as the “Bagger”, and the R 18 Transcontinental, or “ full dresser”, added. The fifth model in the R 18 series, the R 18 Roctane, is expected to be delivered from July 22, 2023. The primary difference between the Roctane and its wheels is its stylish cast aluminum wheels with larger diameters – 21 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear. The BMW Concept R 18 with a 21-inch front wheel made its debut in May 2019. The tires on the Roctane are 120/70-21 at the front and 180/55-18 at the rear, while the base R 18 has 120/70 -19 at the front and 180/65-16 at the rear (larger wheels are optionally available as original accessories). It is expected that these larger wheels will have a significant impact on the look and handling of the R 18 Roctane.
BMW R 18 Roctane
The R 18 Roctane weighs 374 kilograms and has a slacker steering head angle. This is reduced by 2 degrees from 57,3 to 55,3 degrees, and the trail increases from 150 to 185 millimeters. These changes indicate a rather sluggish handling. In addition, the Roctane is about 30 kilograms heavier than the base R 18, which weighs 345 kilograms. Both weight specifications refer to the basic equipment and include a 90-liter petrol tank that is 16 percent full. The chassis of the Roctane remains largely unchanged, with a tubular steel frame, front telescopic forks and a hidden rear shock absorber.
It has 120 millimeters of spring travel at the front and 90 millimeters at the rear, as well as three disc brakes, each with a diameter of 300 millimeters, two at the front and one at the rear. The R 18 Roctane retains the big boxer engine with its impressive specifications: an air-oil-cooled 1.802 cc machine with a striking pushrod valve train, maximum torque of 158 Nm at 3.000 rpm and a peak power of 91 hp (67 kW) at 4.750 rpm per minute. There is also a 6-speed gearbox with paddle shifter and running boards, as well as a conspicuously open final drive through a cardan shaft.
The front of the R 18 Roctane is kept simple
The front of the R 18 Roctane is kept quite simple, while the low rear is equipped with two streamliner-design side cases. These each offer 27 liters of storage space and have practical inner pockets. The side cases are painted in the color of the vehicle. For the 2023 model year, customers can choose between black or two different matt gray tones ("Mineral gray metallic matt" and "Manhattan metallic matt").
A special feature of the R 18 Roctane is the round instrument with needle speedometer and digital displays integrated in the headlight housing, which is reminiscent of older models. Despite its classic appearance, the motorcycle uses modern LED lighting, optionally even with adaptive cornering lights. Another modern feature of the R 18 Roctane is the Keyless Ride radio key system, which is only used to switch the motorcycle on and off. Traditional locks are used for the steering lock, case and the optional fuel filler cap, for which a classic key folds out of the radio key. The R 18 Roctane has various riding modes ("Rain", "Roll" and "Rock"), ABS and ASC slip control, MSR engine drag torque control and cruise control.
Heated grips, reverse assist, hill start assist, etc.
Heated grips, reversing assistance and hill start assistance are available as optional extras. These can come in handy considering there are over 7 hundred pounds of heavy metal to maneuver here. Deliveries of the BMW R 18 Roctane are scheduled to start on July 22, 2023, initially in Europe. In Germany, the price for the basic equipment (including suitcases) will be at least €25.500. This makes the fifth variant of the BMW R 18 an appropriate alternative to the Big Twins from the USA. It remains to be seen how well it will be received by the target group.
