Fresh look: the Honda CMX1100 Rebel model 2022!

  1. Introduction

The A2-compatible Honda CMX500 Rebel has been combining tradition with modern technology in a refreshing way since 2017. All owners, especially younger riders and beginners, are enthusiastic about this bike because it is so much more than just a means of transport. Rather, it stands for a self-confident, open-hearted lifestyle, as a statement for independence and joie de vivre, as an expression of your own identity.

The fusion of the bobber look and modern elements helped the Rebel to become very popular right from the start. As early as 2019, the 500 Rebel was ranked third among the best-selling machines in the custom bike segment in Europe and is still very popular today. It is inexpensive, easy to drive, unrestrictedly suitable for everyday use and offers a wide range of individual design options.

There is always room for improvement, so for the 2021 season, Honda followed up with the larger-displacement CMX1100 Rebel, which goes a step further and appeals to a different clientele - big bike buyers who want more displacement and more power and who are looking for something special that is out stands out from the crowd. Technically, the machine remains unchanged for the 2022 vintage, but a new color (Pearl Stallion Brown) underlines the aesthetics again in a fascinating way.

  1. Model overview

The CMX1100 Rebel promises twice the fun because it is equally suitable for leisurely, relaxed jaunts as it is for exciting rides on winding roads. Riders switching from smaller motorcycles will appreciate the moderate weight and low seat height (only 700 mm). Experienced drivers also recognize the handling potential of the chassis, which impresses with a torsion-resistant tubular steel frame, high-quality spring elements and top brakes.

The 1.084 cc parallel twin, known from the CRF1100L Africa Twin, provides plenty of pressure in the lower and middle speed range thanks to a targeted revision, and the exhaust system provides a pleasant sound note.

The control of the engine management via the electronic throttle grip (throttle-by-wire) enables modern driving aids. There are three standard driving modes (Standard, Rain, Sport) to choose from and, if necessary, can be adapted to the driving conditions or the mood of the driver using a freely configurable user mode. In this way, the power delivery of the engine, the strength of the engine brake, the traction control and the wheelie control as well as the shift behavior of the optional double clutch transmission (DCT) can be influenced. A cruise control is also part of the standard equipment.

The Rebel 1100 also regulates the question of style for casual movement and an impressively powerful appearance in an exciting new way: Plenty of power and torque from a modern twin are paired with a sleek, muscular, functional design, a low seating position and steel fenders at the front and rear over thick tires. The round headlight mixes old school look with new school LED tech and harmonizes perfectly with the handsome LCD round instrument in the cockpit. The 2022 CMX1100 Rebel is available in two colors:

  • Pearl stallion brown **NEW**
  • Gunmetal Black Metallic

3.1 Styling & equipment

  • Bobber style, muscular and simple
  • Full LED lighting, front headlights with 4 integrated lenses
  • Seat dismantling via the ignition key, underneath there is a USB-C charging socket
  • Cruise control as standard

The typical look of the CMX1100 Rebel was developed in the Honda USA design studio, which already designed the CMX500 Rebel. The bike looks provocatively stretched and low, almost lascivious. Slim bodywork and arched tank combine minimalist presence with muscular proportions. The result is an eye-catcher on wheels.

Front and rear fenders are made of 1 mm thick steel and mounted with aluminum brackets. Wherever you look, loving details underline the visual appearance. The 175 mm diameter headlight impresses with its classic shape, but houses four LED lenses for a characteristic signature. The turn signals with a diameter of 55 mm also have a classic look. The oval LED taillight, on the other hand, has a modern design and harmonizes perfectly with the other Rebel details.

The driver's seat allows a secure hold even when accelerating strongly and is very comfortable. The Rebel is also suitable for pillion rides; the rear seat cushion can be quickly and easily dismantled and reattached. Under the seat there is a storage compartment with a volume of three liters, which is equipped with a USB-C charging socket.

All information can be easily read from the striking round LCD instrument in the cockpit. The ignition lock is located on the left side of the frame, with which the seat can also be unlocked and removed with a simple turn of the ignition key. The butted handlebar is held in place by handsome clamps. The driving modes and the optional DCT can be controlled via the switch unit on the left side of the handlebar. A cruise control is fitted as standard for longer stretches of the motorway.

3.2 Engine

  • 084 cc parallel twin
  • Powerful performance with character, top drivability
  • Throttle by wire and a pleasant exhaust sound

The 1.084 cm3 SOHC 8-valve parallel twin of the Rebel 1100 is based on the engine of the CRF1100L Africa Twin, which has been specifically adapted to meet the requirements of a cruiser. The peak output of 87 HP (64 kW) at 7.000 rpm and 98 Nm maximum torque at 4.750 rpm represent a sovereign engine in this market segment strong draft.

The compact dimensions of the engine are particularly pleasant. Thanks to the concept with the Unicam drive train and crankcase with semi-dry sump oil pan, the weight distribution was optimal. In conjunction with the frame structure, a low center of gravity with maximum ground clearance is achieved. Furthermore, the exhaust system, the valve control and the stroke have been revised and adapted.

The crankshaft cranked by 270 ° and the appropriate ignition interval help the 1100 Twin to have pulsating running characteristics. The engine is controlled by an electronic throttle (Throttle By Wire), has a PGM-FI fuel injection and a
7 liter airbox. The exhaust sound contributes to driving pleasure. Under 4.000 tours, the Rebel sounds deep and bassy, with increasing speed, strength and presence gain.

The water pump is integrated in the vertically divided crankcase. Both the version with and without the DCT have the same crankcase. Outwardly, they differ only slightly from each other. Secondary vibrations are neutralized by the reciprocal movement of the pistons, while two balance shafts cancel out the primary inertial forces. The water and oil pumps are also driven by the balance shafts.

A crankshaft pulse sensor enables misfire detection, while LAF (Linear Air Flow) sensors measure the air / fuel mixture ratio in the intake tract. Both are important for compliance with the EURO5 standard.

3.3 Motor electronics

  • Three driving modes (Standard, Rain, Sport) plus freely configurable user mode
  • 3-stage traction control (HSTC) and wheelie control

The electronic throttle (Throttle by Wire) controls the power delivery and the character of the engine via the HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) and the Wheelie Control. Three 3 driving modes cover a wide range of operating conditions. The mode is selected using the switch unit on the left side of the handlebar. A message in the display indicates that traction control is activated.

  • STANDARD offers a medium setting for power delivery, traction control, engine braking and wheelie control and ensures relaxed driving at low revs and speeds.
  • RAIN reduces the power delivery of the engine and the engine brake. In addition, wheelie control and traction control regulate at the highest level, for relaxed driving and additional safety on wet or slippery roads.
  • SPORTS ensures more direct, responsive power delivery, full engine braking plus wheelie control and traction control at a low level, which is ideal for getting maximum performance
  • The USER Mode allows an individual selection of all parameters. Once set, the USER setting is automatically saved so that it does not have to be reset every time the ignition is switched on.

3.4 Dual clutch transmission (DCT)

  • With DCT, gear changes can be automated (AT) or manually (MT)
  • Customizable USER mode

Honda has already sold over 200.000 motorcycles with dual clutch transmissions (DCT stands for Dual Clutch Transmission) in Europe. In 2009 the system debuted in the VFR1200F. The acceptance of DCT technology, which only Honda offers in the motorcycle sector, is high. For the models that are optionally available with a dual clutch transmission, 2020% of customers preferred this equipment to a conventional manual transmission in 53.

The dual clutch transmission makes driving easier by automatically changing gear. The electronic-hydraulic control also takes care of the dosed actuation of the clutch for starting. That's why there is no clutch lever on Hondas with DCT. Simply turning the throttle after a riding mode is activated is enough to get going. The simple operation quickly becomes a pleasant matter of course for users, something that is reluctant to do without.

Technically, the DCT system uses two clutches: One for starting and for gears one, three and five, the other for second, fourth and sixth gear. Each clutch is controlled by an electronic-hydraulic circuit. With automated shifting, the system preselects the next gear with the help of the clutch that is currently open. While this one closes electronically, the other one opens at the same time - so that the newly selected gear can intervene without interrupting tractive power.

The DCT system basically offers two modes of operation. On the one hand the automatic setting (AT) with preprogrammed shift patterns, which constantly monitors the speed, the selected gear and the engine speed in order to automatically control the optimal shifting process. On the other hand, there is the manual operating mode (MT) for targeted gear changes using the paddles on the left side of the handlebar. The automated DCT switching patterns are linked to the three driving modes through control via the electronic throttle grip.

  • In mode STANDARD The DCT shift pattern offers a balance between relaxed cruising in high gear at low speed and good pull-in at full throttle in low gear.
  •  RAIN shifts faster to higher gears for extremely smooth handling.
  • SPORTS keeps the lower gears longer and the engine speed longer before upshifting. When downshifting at higher speeds, a stronger engine braking effect is achieved.
  • The USER Modus enables the driver to adopt one of the three DCT switching patterns for the driving modes as well, depending on their preference.

3.5 chassis

  • The tubular steel frame characterizes the Rebel styling
  • Finely balanced steering geometry for stability and easy handling
  • 43mm cartridge fork and stereo shock absorber with reservoir
  • Front radial four-piston brake caliper, floating 330mm disc
  • 130 / 70B18 front tires and 180 / 65B16 rear tires

The tubular steel frame of the big Rebel is based on the puristic design of its 500 sister, including the typical diagonal ascending lines. The tank sits above the main pipes, which with a diameter of 35 mm are of course larger than on the CMX500 Rebel. The swing arm with a tube diameter of 50,8 mm also has a comparable look.

The wheelbase is 1.520 mm with a caster of 110 mm. In addition to the right look, this data also allows stability, precision and easy handling. The wet weight is 223 kg for the 1100 Rebel with conventional manual transmission and 233 kg for the version with DCT.

The seat height is 700 mm, which promotes comfort. Handlebars, seat and the centrally mounted footrests ensure that the driver sits comfortably and upright. The overall geometry allows generous lean angles of 35 ° on each side, so nothing stands in the way of winding exits.

The 43mm cartridge fork has black lower tubes and titanium oxide coated stanchions. The rear shock absorbers each have a 12,5mm piston rod and a reservoir. Both the fork and the shock absorbers can be adjusted in terms of spring preload.

The braking force is transmitted at the front by means of a radially mounted monoblock four-piston brake caliper, which grips a floating 330mm disc. A single-piston brake caliper with a 256mm disc works at the rear. Of course, the Rebel has ABS. The easy-care cast aluminum wheels carry 130 / 70B18 tires at the front and 180 / 65B16 at the rear.
