The knowledge of true all-rounders has always been in Honda's DNA. The XL70S debuted on the market in the late 250s as a universal enduro that convincingly combined asphalt suitability with off-road qualities. Subsequent Honda XL enduros were also very popular, thanks to the successful combination of an economical single-cylinder four-stroke engine and high-quality chassis components. These motorcycles fascinated with versatile qualities combined with robust suitability for everyday use, which delighted owners around the world.

Update for popular Honda Enduro CRF300L (2023)!

Over a decade ago, valuable discussions took place within Honda's R&D department to develop a modern and highly versatile single-cylinder four-stroke machine. Honda's extensive experience and success in off-road racing and off-road motorcycle production should play an important role in the development of the future model. The focus was on the needs of future customers. Because while some are looking for off-road suitability at a competitive level, many value wide-ranging use, suitability for everyday use and comfort. The overriding desire is a reliable motorcycle with attractive off-road styling that allows for weekday mobility on the road and weekend riding fun over unpaved terrain.

The Honda developers designed a roadworthy CRF model with a holistic view of user needs. It should have a powerful and economical engine, and the chassis also had to cover a wide range. It should also be affordable, offer high quality and a convincing price-performance ratio. Low operating costs were also required.

Update for popular Honda Enduro CRF300L (2023)!

The CRF250L, which finally hit the market in Europe in 2012, was meant to be that bike. The Honda engineers have done everything right, because it is not for nothing that the CRF250L has enjoyed consistent sales success worldwide ever since. In addition, it proved to be the perfect starting point for a long-distance rally version to follow. For the 300 model year, the single-cylinder engine of the current CRF2020L received a displacement update to 286 cubic meters including Euro 5 approval and an assist/slipper clutch. In addition, the weight of the chassis could be reduced by 4 kilos. The seating position has also been revised, the seat and tank have been made slimmer and the LCD display in the cockpit has been improved, with positive letters and numbers on a white background.

Update for popular Honda Enduro CRF300L (2023)!

The CRF2023L is technically unchanged for the 300 model year. What is new, however, is an additional paint finish and the standard equipment with hand protectors. This means that the CRF300L remains an attractive all-purpose motorcycle in every respect for demanding enduro enthusiasts of all ages.

Model overview

The CRF300L's advanced-engineered single-cylinder powerplant features a DOHC, 286-valve, XNUMXcc cylinder head3 Displacement and produces an output of 27,3 hp (20,1 kW) at 8.500 rpm and a maximum torque of 26,6 Nm at 6.500 rpm. Gears 1 to 5 are rather short in order to support responsiveness and acceleration. The 6th gear has a longer gear ratio for low-revving driving at higher speeds. Thanks to the slipper clutch, the rider retains control of the rear wheel more effortlessly and the effort required to operate the clutch is reduced.

The interplay of steel frame, aluminum swing arm, light lower triple clamp and targeted stiffness balance allows sensitive feedback for the driver. The steering geometry is also optimally matched to the chassis with long spring deflections at the front and rear and plenty of ground clearance. The sporty, attractive bodywork is characterized by a slim tank and matching seat. The LCD display is practical and easy to read. An upright seating position and wide handlebars support easy handling and excellent maneuverability for untroubled driving pleasure in urban environments as well as on off-road excursions.

The 300 CRF2023L is available in two colorways:

  • Swift Gray (with orange graphics and black handguards)
  • Extreme Red (with red handguards)

Motor

  • DOHC 286-valve single-cylinder engine with XNUMX cc3
  • Gear ratio for strong acceleration and at the same time relaxed driving at higher speeds.
  • Effortless anti-hopping clutch

The liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a four-valve cylinder head and two overhead camshafts delivers 27,3 hp (20,1 kW) at 8.500 rpm, and the maximum torque of 26,6 Nm is available at 6.500 rpm. Bore and stroke measure 76 x 63 mm, the compression ratio is 10.7:1. In order to use the torque and to optimize response and acceleration, the gears 1 to 5 have a shorter gear ratio and the 6th gear is longer. This allows you to enjoy relaxed driving even at higher speeds. The anti-hopping clutch supports low manual forces on the clutch lever and prevents the rear wheel from locking up when you downshift quickly and brake at the same time - which supports maximum control on and off the road.

A high-quality iridium spark plug, which lasts about four times longer than a conventional spark dispenser, and the precise preparation of the fuel-air mixture by the PGM-FI injection system increase combustion efficiency and reduce the environmental footprint. The single-cylinder construction of the CRF300L is consistently optimized for smooth running and economical consumption. An offset cylinder reduces internal friction losses and improves stability. The butt has a molybdenum coating on the shirts. At the same time, the oil pump equalizes the pressure in the housing without ejecting oily gases. The crankshaft in the horizontally divided engine housing has plain bearings, which contributes significantly to smooth running. The valves are laboriously actuated via roller rocker arms. A roller bearing is installed in the crankshaft connecting rod foot, which offers the advantage of low friction and also contributes to reducing fuel consumption. A balancer shaft reduces primary vibrations.

The cooling system is equipped with a 10,7 kW fan, which is arranged on the left and protected by a plastic grille, which at the same time redirects the air flow in a targeted manner. The fan keeps the engine temperature stable both at a moderate pace, in traffic jams and under heavy loads off-road.

Suspension

  • Agile, easy handling for every kind of asphalt curves and off-road terrain
  • Steel loop frame and aluminum Pro-Link swingarm, Stability and flex behavior carefully optimized
Long suspension travel front and rear, plenty of ground clearance

The CRF300L weighs just 142 kg ready to drive with a full tank of fuel. The loop steel frame with a split undercarriage combines rigidity and flex behavior in an ideal way in order to combine balanced handling and sensitive feedback with optimal traction on the front and rear wheels. The one-piece cast aluminum swingarm also contributes to a safe driving experience. The attractive and precise prism chain tensioners are made of milled aluminum. The lower triple clamp is also made of aluminum, with the lightweight construction above the machine's center of gravity contributing to the desired agile handling and steering response.

The wheelbase is 1.455 mm. Fork angle and trail are measured at 27,5° and 109 mm. The ground clearance is 285 mm and the turning circle is 2,3 meters. Showa's 43mm inverted forks have 260mm of travel. Carefully tuned spring strength and damping support the safely controllable driving behavior on all surfaces and at every pace. Showa strut and Pro-Link suspension on the rear wheel also generate 260 mm of travel.

The front wheel decelerates with a 256 mm brake disc and a two-piston brake caliper. The rear wheel is equipped with a 220 mm brake disc and a single-piston caliper. As with the CRF competition machines, the rear brake cylinder and the hydraulic reservoir are integrated to save space. Also derived from the CRF crossers are the wave brake discs, which boast impressive self-cleaning properties. The 2-channel ABS is standard on board. Enduro tires with a block profile in the dimensions 80/100-21 51P (front) and 120/80-18 62P (rear) offer good all-round traction in almost every driving situation. The 21-inch front wheel and the 18-inch rear wheel increase stability when driving off-road and also allow the installation of uncompromising off-road studded tires if required.

Styling & Furnishing

  • New handguards
  • Attractive bodywork modeled on the CRF motocrosser
  • Perfect seating position promotes optimal control
  • LCD display easy to read

The CRF300L's sleek bodywork and design cues are inspired by the CRF250R/CRF450R motocross models. The front part of the seat padding overlaps the 7,8 liter tank, which benefits comfort and freedom of movement. Headlight front mask and high-positioned MX front fender complement the side panels with start number panels. New to the 2023 CRF300L are the standard fitted handguards which provide additional protection when riding in tight spaces. The seat height is 880 mm. The seat triangle supports an ergonomically upright sitting position, the handlebars reach slightly backwards, and the footrests are also lowered and positioned slightly backwards.

This not only makes it easier to stand in the pegs while driving, but also to shift gears with rather bulky off-road boots. For a safe stand, the fold-out side stand has a sufficient contact area. The LCD display, which weighs just 70 grams, is easy to read with black, 23 mm high numbers and letters on a white background. In addition to the speedometer, rev counter and a gear display, information is provided on consumption, mileage and average speed. Fuel gauge, timer and stopwatch are also on board.

Accessories

  • The range of original accessories from Honda for the CRF300L includes a 35 liter top case including luggage rack and mounting material, a matching inner pannier and a robust engine protection plate made of 4 mm thick aluminum.
