1. Introduction

In 2014 the sporty, fully disguised CBR650F entered the market together with the naked CB650F. Thanks to its dynamic four-cylinder engine, the model expanded the range in the medium displacement class for sports bikes. In 2017 the CBR650F received a revised design that presented the engine even better. In addition, there was more engine power, a Showa Dual Bending Valve telescopic fork and revised Nissin brake calipers. In 2019, Honda further developed the CBR650F into the CBR650R, putting an even more sporty and everyday-friendly overall package on the road.

The CBR650R serves a niche: a four-cylinder sports bike that is as much fun to ride as machines with a double-R in the model designation, while at the same time offering low operating costs. The excitingly sporty machine is predestined for adrenaline-rushing driving dynamics on the weekend and everyday use at the same time. This positioning was well received in the market: In its debut year 2019, the CBR650R was already the second best-selling sports motorcycle in Europe. Two seasons later, the CBR650R received further facelift improvements, including an upgrade to the front suspension. So the CBR650R was finally able to develop into the best-selling sports motorcycle in Europe in 2021. In the 2022 model year, new paintwork and decors enhance the visual appearance.

  1. Model overview

An important component of the CBR650R from a functional point of view is the 41 mm Showa Big Piston Upside Down fork *, which ensures convincingly precise driving characteristics. The Euro 5 conformity of the engine was ensured as early as 2021 without any loss of performance. The other updates included improved readability of the LCD display, modified headlight reflectors and a USB-C charging socket under the seat. Cosmetic changes to the side panels and license plate holder were also included. The 650 model year CBR2022R is available in two new colors:

  • Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic (with orange applications)
  • Grand Prix Red (with new decor)

* Full name: Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFFBP) telescopic fork

  1. Features

3.1 chassis

  • Showa Separate Function Big Piston (SFFBP) upside down fork
  • Radial four-piston brake calipers at the front with floating brake discs
  • Front and rear tires in dimensions 120 / 70ZR17 and 180 / 55ZR17

The carefully constructed steel frame has forged mounts for the swing arm bearings and two elliptical bars with a precisely balanced stiffness balance (stiffer around the steering head area and more flexible in the handlebar sections) to ensure the best handling properties combined with a high level of feedback for the driver. The wheelbase is 1.450 mm, the steering head angle 25,5 ° and the caster 101 mm. The empty weight with a full tank is 208 kg.

The 41 mm SFFBP upside down fork from Showa impresses all along the line as a front wheel guide. In the fork tubes on the right and left, damping and suspension are carried out separately. In this way, the best damping performance and low weight can be achieved in a practical manner. A single, larger-sized pressure piston allows optimized damping properties. The Showa monoshock strut, which directly supports the artfully crescent-shaped swing arm made of cast aluminum, can be adjusted 7-fold in the spring preload.

Radially mounted four-piston brake calipers access floating 310mm wave brake discs on the front wheel. A 240mm brake disc with a single-piston brake caliper provides support on the rear wheel. A two-channel ABS system protects against unwanted jamming during a sporty pace. Tires in the dimensions 120/70 ZR17 (front) and 180/55 ZR17 (rear) are mounted on the cast aluminum wheels.

3.2 Styling & equipment

  • Sporty designed side panels and license plate holders
  • Easily readable LCD display in the cockpit
  • USB C charging socket under the seat

The CBR650R is attractive and sporty and slim. The full fairing is cleverly cut so that the four-cylinder engine remains clearly visible. The wedge-shaped LED double headlights give the machine a sharp, dynamic look. This is how the sporty middleweight combines lightness with sleek lines in a respectable way.

The bench offers enough space for two people and still keeps the rear section compact and short, which further emphasizes the athleticism of the machine. The open side sections, made up of several elements, support the look as well as good knee closure. The rear splash guard with license plate holder is also sporty.

The active driving seat position supports dynamic driving pleasure. The clip-ons are mounted under the (upper) fork bridge and matched to the position of the gracefully designed footrest system. There is a USB C charging socket under the seat for charging a mobile device. The seat height is 810 mm. The informative and stylish LCD display in the cockpit includes a gear display and a gearshift indicator.

3.3 Engine

  • 95 HP power, 63 Nm max.torque, with 48 HP also A2-capable
  • Adjustable traction control (HSTC)
  • Assist slipper clutch
  • Meets the Euro 5 emissions standard

The 649 cm3 The large DOHC 16-valve in-line four-cylinder is tailored to meet practical requirements for sporty performance and the best possible smoothness. It embodies everything that has always distinguished Honda's inline four engines, namely inspiring performance, smooth running and exemplary reliability. The peak power of 95 hp is achieved at 12.000 rpm, the peak torque is 63 Nm at 9.500 rpm.

A conversion to 2 HP is possible for driver's license class A48 holders. The engine specification to meet the Euro 5 standard (from the 2021 model year) required a revision of the ECU control unit, the camshafts, the intake timing, the catalytic converter and the rear silencer, as well as the addition of a crankshaft pulse sensor.

The direct actuation of the overhead camshafts via bucket tappets ensures a compact design of the cylinder head. Bore and stroke are 67mm x 46mm, the compression ratio 11,6: 1. Two air ducts supply the airbox with air and generate a throaty suction noise. Long-life Iridium spark plugs are installed as standard.

Pistons with asymmetrical piston skirts minimize the friction losses on the cylinder walls. Special outer surfaces of the liners reduce oil consumption and friction through improved heat transfer. A low-noise timing chain reduces friction losses thanks to a vanadium coating. The cylinder head and cylinders are cooled via ducts inside the engine, which means that most of the cooling hoses that are usually routed outside are superfluous.

The in-line four-cylinder with the cylinder bank inclined by 30 degrees has a compact architecture and a raised six-speed gearbox. The Assist Slipper clutch makes shifting up easier and making downshifting smoother. When shifting through the gears in a sporty manner before bends, the locking of the rear wheel is prevented. The adjustable HSTC traction control (Honda Selectable Torque Control) is installed for increased safety. This can also be switched off if desired. Consumption is 4,9 liters per 100 km (measured in WMTC mode). The range with a 15,4 liter tank of fuel is over 300 km.
