New electric scooter – the 2022 Yamaha NEO's!

Uncomplicated and quiet on the move in the city - urban mobility for everyone! Yamaha has been one of the most successful and respected manufacturers in Europe in the important 50cc scooter market for many decades. Since the 1990s, the company has produced some of the most successful models under the Yamaha and MBK brands, including cult vehicles such as the BW's/Booster, the Aerox/Nitro and the combustion version of the NEO's/Ovetto. Parallel to its core business with combustion engines, Yamaha has been investing extensive research and development work in the field of electrically powered scooters for over 30 years. In 1991, the company presented its first electric scooter at the Tokyo Motor Show, the Frog model. Since that time, Yamaha has continuously worked on the development of electric scooters and has launched several models in different Asian countries. For 2022 the new NEO's generation will be presented on the European market. It is Yamaha's first mass-produced electric scooter that is equivalent to a 50cc scooter. This affordable, zero-emission new model will play an important role in transforming urban mobility in European cities.

clear, sporty, universal styling

The NEO's has always been known for its simple, universal and attractive design. The new electric model features a sleek new bodywork with clean lines and minimal front and rear overhangs – a new scooter with a character all of its own. The compact fairing features soft, rounded shapes that enhance the relaxed feel and convey the easy-to-ride character of this ultra-quiet, zero-emission scooter. The two LED headlights are surrounded by white rings. They provide a fresh and modern look and are inspired by the iconic 'face' of the original NEO.

In addition to its aesthetic design, the NEO's also offers a number of practical details that underline its role as an urban commuter vehicle. Rubber strips on the contours of the cladding not only ensure an elegant design - they are also effective protection against damage. The NEO's is offered in two clear and expressive colors. They go perfectly with its stylish understatement character: Milky White and Midnight Black. In both cases there is a special aqua color as an accent on the battery cover and as a color for the NEO's 3D logo. It is the trademark of this electric scooter.

Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU) - Smooth, quiet and efficient

The new NEO's is powered by the latest generation of the Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU). This is where the extensive know-how that the company has acquired over the past three decades in the development of groundbreaking electric vehicles such as the Passol and the EC-03 came into play. The heart of this compact wheel hub direct drive is a newly developed, air-cooled, brushless electric motor, which runs particularly smoothly with its strong torque, accelerates powerfully and works extremely quietly. A key feature of this second YIPU generation is the highly efficient gearless design. This eliminates the power losses that occur with gears and drive belts. Another significant advantage of the Yamaha direct drive is that mechanical noise is virtually eliminated. This leads to extremely quiet running and enables relaxed and pleasant driving pleasure.

The innovative YIPU construction also acts as a rear hub, also includes the rear brake and is mounted directly on the rim. The motor control unit (MCU), which controls the power output, is located in the single-sided swingarm. The rear wheel rim can be easily removed to change tires by removing five screws. Practical, uncomplicated, economical and reliable, the new NEO's is ideal for anyone looking for an affordable, latest-generation, zero-emission scooter for their daily commute and city commute.

Removable Yamaha lithium-ion battery

The 8V/50,4Ah lithium-ion battery, weighing only 19,2 kg, is located under the seat in the center of the chassis and delivers high power to the rear wheel. Developed and produced by Yamaha itself, this battery has a high energy density and offers a range of approximately 37 km when fully charged when the scooter is ridden in WMTC Class 1 in STD mode and the battery temperature is 25 °C. The NEO's comes standard with a rechargeable battery. But there is a connection and a box for an optional second battery, which increases the range to around 68 kilometers. The battery can be charged when installed, but alternatively can also be removed for convenient charging indoors. The NEO comes with a special portable charger that plugs into a standard household power outlet. A full charge takes about eight hours.

Intelligent battery and motor performance

Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) and a Motor Control Unit (MCU) are designed to get the most out of charge capacity and therefore regulate when and how the batteries are used. The system switches between the batteries accordingly. When the charge level is low, the power output is automatically reduced.

fast and controllable acceleration

The combination of a highly efficient direct-drive wheel hub motor and Yamaha's 50,4 V/19,2 Ah lithium-ion battery with high energy density develops plenty of torque in all rotary handle positions for powerful acceleration from a standing start and while driving. Thanks to the clutchless and gearless power transmission, the ride is evenly smooth. This makes the new NEO's comfortable to drive and ideal for urban stop-and-go traffic. It was particularly important to Yamaha that the NEO's twist grip retrieved the power in an easily metered manner. The carefully developed response behavior ensures precise control when starting off and smooth power delivery at slow speeds. This eliminates unexpected or delayed acceleration or uneven power delivery, as is the case with some electric scooters.

Ride mode selection for different riding conditions

NEO's riders can choose between two different riding modes depending on the conditions and individual preferences. It is operated very simply via a switch on the right-hand side of the handlebar. In standard mode (STD), the power output is 2,06 kW at 40 km/h. This option is recommended for normal driving. The ECO mode is designed for lower power consumption and intended for long journeys where the maximum range is paramount. In ECO mode, the maximum power is limited to 1,58 kW at 30 km/h and the top speed to 35 km/h. The power output is reduced over the entire speed range to enable a range of approx. 38,5 km with a fully charged battery.

Smooth, easy and quiet mobility in the city

With many cities restricting or even banning the use of vehicles with internal combustion engines, the development of zero-emission vehicles is becoming increasingly important. Inexpensive, easy-to-handle vehicles like the new NEO's offer real alternatives for smooth and quiet mobility in city traffic. Yamaha's test data shows that the NEO's electric motor measured 55 dB from a distance of 71 meters - compared to XNUMX dB for the combustion engine version.

Connectivity via Yamaha MyRide app

Of course, connectivity is an important feature of the new NEO. The scooter is connected to the smartphone with the free Yamaha MyRide app. Indicators on the LCD instrument provide real-time notification of incoming calls and messages. The app also informs the user at all times about the status of the vehicle and the charge level of the batteries. In addition, the NEO's rider naturally also benefits from the general features of the Yamaha MyRide app: Tours can be recorded, for example, including data such as speed and acceleration and shared with the community if desired.

Compact and easy to read LCD cockpit - keyless smart key system

In addition to the usual functions, the easy-to-read LCD cockpit also provides information about the charge level of the main battery and the optional second battery. According to the different modes, there is also an indicator for the STD or ECO driving mode and the information about the reduced power output. The smart key system allows the driver to start the scooter - without having to physically operate a key: the smart key can conveniently remain in the pocket.

Comfort, driving pleasure and user-friendliness

With a natural and upright riding position, a seat height of 795mm and ample legroom, the NEO's offers a comfortable and relaxed ride for a wide range of riders. The Yamaha design team did not place the battery under the running board, but under the seat. This leaves more space in the footwell. The generous seat upholstery and the carefully planned triangle of handlebars, seat and footboard are ergonomically efficient to ensure optimal driving comfort. And the seat height is dimensioned in such a way that the feet can easily reach the ground when standing.

Newly developed chassis

The Yamaha designers have developed a completely new chassis for the electric NEO's. Among other things, its high-strength frame integrates holders for attaching various accessories such as luggage transport solutions, a leg protection cover and a smartphone holder. The new KYB fork has robust, nickel-plated inner tubes. This mixture makes the NEO's an ideal overall package for city commuters who are looking for an uncomplicated, reliable and light means of transport.

Redesigned cast wheels and special tires with low rolling resistance

The lightweight 13-inch front rim in an attractive 10-spoke design is painted completely gloss black. The 110 tire makes steering easier and provides stability in corners. At the back, the NEO's has a newly developed low-pressure cast rim. It is bolted to the direct drive motor and the entire unit is guided by a single-sided swingarm. The 130 rear tire ensures good traction and cornering stability. The tires have been specially developed for the new NEO's. With their low rolling resistance and rubber compound, they help reduce power consumption for optimal performance and range.

Storage space under the bench

With only one battery in the storage compartment under the NEO's seat, there is still room for a jet helmet. Even if an optional second battery is on board for additional range, there is still space for a rain suit or other small items.
