Since the R1 changed the world of supersport forever in 1998, Yamaha's R-Series has become an integral part of the high-performance motorcycle scene. The flagship today is the R1M - the most advanced production motorcycle ever built by Yamaha. The R-Series offers sports drivers an excellent selection of machines, including the R1 and R6 RACE, which can be perfected for use in racing with parts from the GYTR program. Entry into the supersport area is also provided: R3 and R125 are the ideal entry points into R / World for new and young drivers. Yamaha wants to set new standards in this segment. The R series is being expanded by another member: the new R7! It will be available in an open version and a 35 kW variant for the A2 driving license class.

Yamaha R7: Respecting the legend

No motorcycle would ever compare it to the original YZF-R7. Only 1999 of this factory racing machine were built in 500 to gain approval for the World Superbike Championship and the Suzuka 8-hour race. Ridden in races by legendary riders like Noriyuki Haga and Wataru Yoshikawa, the YZF-R7 is widely recognized as one of the most exotic and sought-after Japanese motorcycles ever built. The name of the new R7 pays homage to the original, limited-edition superbike YZF-R7. The 2021 R7 bears her name with pride. It's a different kind of super sports machine.

The new Yamaha R7: A new dimension in R / World

The heart of the R7 is the popular and absolutely reliable CP2 engine, which is famous for its strong and linear torque development. Yamaha's new super athlete is ready to bring a breath of fresh air to the middleweight market. In addition to the premium fairing, the R7 comes with other high-quality specifications such as the radially mounted front wheel brakes, the upside-down fork and an anti-hopping clutch. It combines gripping supersport performance with outstanding handling and the uncompromising style of the R series. All of this at a highly competitive price.

The R7 is not only light, compact and agile, it has also set itself the task of offering the driver the greatest fun factor in its class. Equally when driving on the racetrack or in traffic. This supersport motorcycle offers an affordable start to the R / World.

689 cc CP2 engine: sporty performance paired with driving fun for everyday use

With its clear focus on pure driving pleasure, accessibility and affordability, the R7 opens up an exciting new dimension in the R series. The successful Yamaha CP2 engine with a displacement of 689 ccm is considered to be one of the most distinctive and reliable in its class and, with its direct power delivery, is the perfect drive for this new model.

Thanks to the crankshaft with a 270 degree crank pin offset, which ensures an uneven firing sequence, the liquid-cooled two-cylinder CP2 in-line engine with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder offers high torque with a linear curve over a wide speed range. It responds lively in all gears and at every engine speed. It delivers the maximum output of 73,4 PS (54 kW) at 8.750 rpm and, more importantly, the maximum torque of 67 Nm at 6.500 rpm. The R7 offers an extremely strong start from a standing start and breathtaking acceleration.

The special revisions include a new ECU tuning, optimized air intake ducts, an improved exhaust design and optimized fuel injection. These changes improve controllability and ensure smooth and direct gas acceptance. Of course, this also means that the model is fully EU5-compliant. The gear ratio is slightly reduced for an even sportier character with stronger acceleration.

Slipper Clutch: Ultimate Control

One of the most important features of the R7 is the slipper clutch. It ensures smoother gear changes and prevents the engine from over-revving and the rear wheel from jumping when braking hard. Handling when approaching curves is more predictable and easier to control. Another advantage of the R7's slipper clutch is that it requires less force on the clutch lever, around 33% less than standard clutches.

Optional Quick Shift System: upshifting without clutch for seamless acceleration

Drivers can optionally have a Quick Shift System (QSS) installed in their new R7 through their Yamaha partner. This simple but effective QSS recognizes the upshift through a switch, whereupon the ECU interrupts the power transmission for a few milliseconds. This enables faster and smoother upshifts and thus even better acceleration.

Slim and light frame: Ultra-responsive handling with agile cornering

The design of the R7 is particularly slim and compact. Its frame allows responsive and agile handling and is designed for quick changes of direction. A permanently mounted central strut made of aluminum contributes to the agile handling of the machine on the racetrack and on the road. Tubes with different stiffnesses are also used in the frame to ensure the ideal balance.

Fully adjustable 41mm upside-down fork: Easy setup for the racetrack or street

The new chassis played an important role in the development of the R7. The R7 should guarantee a direct feel for the front wheel when braking and cornering. The new 41 mm KYB fork offers a high degree of stability and optimal road holding - on race tracks and winding country roads alike.

The fork is fully adjustable in preload and compression and rebound damping. Adjustments can be made quickly and easily with the compression stage in the left bar and the rebound stage in the right bar.

For precise handling with clean feedback, the highly developed upside-down fork of the R7 offers a steep steering head angle of 23,7 degrees with 90 mm caster. The wheelbase is a compact 1395 mm. With the weight distribution between the front and rear wheels in a ratio of 51/49, this new supersport machine was built for sharp and fast cornering.

Newly developed monocross rear wheel suspension with deflection

The R7 has a newly developed articulated monocross shock absorber whose damping characteristics and spring rate are matched to the sporty character of the machine. Thanks to the horizontal mounting, the shock absorber contributes to mass centralization, which benefits handling agility. Spring preload and rebound damping are adjustable.

Supersport seating position: clip-on handlebars, pegs and solo-style driver's seat

The sporty seating position of the R7 is the result of many hours that the Yamaha factory riders spent on test drives. The clip-ons underline the motorcycle's supersport DNA. After much experimentation with various handlebar, seat and footrest configurations, the end result is a sporty, adaptable driving position that offers plenty of freedom of movement for different driving situations - especially on racetracks and winding roads.

The shape of the seat, which is narrower on the inside of the driver's thighs and wider at the back, allows maximum freedom of movement. The angle of the clip-ons and the positioning of the footrests have been carefully selected to allow a crouched riding position that gives the rider the best possible control and aerodynamic efficiency. The deep tank lining also contributes to the tight seating position. The knee recesses offer the driver additional support when braking and in an inclined position.

The R7 has a separate pillion seat. Drivers who ride alone can optionally attach a pillion seat cover from the Yamaha range of genuine accessories to their R7.

Radial brake calipers and radial master cylinder: high performance with little effort

The affiliation of the R7 to the R series is evident in the highly developed front brake with radial 4-piston brake calipers, which ensure precise and even braking. This advanced front brake system also includes a Brembo radial master cylinder that provides linear braking power for improved control.

Ultra-sporty dimensions: the search for perfect control

What makes the R7 so attractive is the fact that it offers its drivers a high level of control in a wide variety of situations. Thanks to its compact and athletic profile, the driver is in control of the machine - not the other way around.

With a wet weight of only 188 kg and compact dimensions, the machine is extremely accessible, so that the driver can truly become one with this new generation of super sports car. Coupled with the mass-centralized design, small frontal area and low moment of inertia, the compactness of the R7 gives the driver a feeling of complete control. It gives the driver the same pleasure on track days, weekend trips or daily commutes.

Super slim R-fairing: Reduced drag for optimal performance

The key to making a supersport machine as aerodynamically efficient as possible is to keep the front as small as possible. It is precisely in this area that the R7 has a strong advantage. The compact CP2 engine is one of the narrowest in the 700cc class. The minimalist tubular frame keeps the overall dimensions to a minimum. These factors have enabled Yamaha to build the slimmest member of the entire R-Series - even narrower than the R3 and R125. The R7 is one of the most aerodynamically efficient bikes ever.

The narrow front section not only makes the R7 an absolute eye-catcher, but also pays off in terms of performance. In terms of maximum output, the new R7 can keep up with any other Yamaha model with a CP2 engine and achieve a significantly higher top speed.

The front of the R series redefined: As puristic and aggressive as ever

With the aggressive glow in the identical twin headlights and the M-shaped air intake system in the style of a YZR-M1 MotoGP ™ machine, there is no doubt that the R7 is a full member of the R-Series. While the symmetrical double headlights serve as position lights, the actual headlight is hidden in the opening of the air intake system.

Newly developed full LCD instruments

The compact Supersport cockpit includes newly developed, lightweight LCD instruments with a high-contrast negative mode display that provides clear and easy-to-read information so that the R7 driver can concentrate on the road ahead. The display includes a gear indicator, a shift indicator and a QSS indicator when this optional system is used.

Light aluminum wheels with 10 spokes

In order to guarantee effortless maneuvering, agile handling and a fine response of the chassis, the R7 is equipped with light 10-spoke alloy wheels. A 120 / 70ZR17 front tire and a wide 180 / 55ZR17 rear tire offer plenty of grip for stable and safe road holding when cornering, accelerating and braking.

Colors, availability and price of the R7

The dynamic new R7 is available in two color options and was chosen to introduce the next generation of colors and graphics for the R-Series for the first time.

The first color option is Icon Blue; In this color, the upper and lower panels and wheels are painted in the familiar blue, while the sides of the panel are painted in a contrasting, darker matt blue. The engine, frame cover and swing arm have a crystal graphite finish that underlines the R7's performance and dynamism.

The R7 will also be available in the Yamaha Black color option with minimal graphics and accents. The glossy black finish gives the machine a purposeful look, which is rounded off by the Crystal Graphite motor and frame.

Delivery to European Yamaha partners will begin in October 2021. The recommended retail price will be announced shortly.
