BMW iX is the first premium vehicle with 5G on board!

With the BMW iX, the BMW Group is the first premium manufacturer to bring the 5G mobile communications standard into a globally available series vehicle, and Deutsche Telekom is offering the corresponding 5G connectivity for a vehicle for the first time. The Personal eSIM can easily be expanded and activated via an existing contract with the MobilityConnect option. Like a smartwatch, this turns the vehicle into another networked device for customers. They benefit from the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G. The vehicle offers significantly improved telephony * quality and enables a 5G WiFi hotspot * for up to ten devices in the vehicle. The activated Personal eSIM is linked directly to the customer's BMW ID. It can be used, including the associated functions, in any enabled vehicle.

Mobility is entering the 5G era for the first time.

The new 5G mobile radio standard will significantly increase the possibilities of data transmission compared to the previous ones. This creates new, data-based applications and increases the quality of the existing ones many times over. For mobility, this means a comprehensive expansion of data-based services in the areas of entertainment and infotainment, automated and assisted driving and, above all, traffic safety. The 5G standard is a decisive accelerator for future innovations in mobility and other fields of application.

For the first time, Deutsche Telekom and the BMW Group are using Personal eSIM and MobilityConnect to link the vehicle connection to the customer's mobile network on a 5G basis. In addition, Telekom customers can for the first time extend their existing mobile phone contract to their car.

Personal eSIM, real 'Dual-SIM-Dual-Active' and WiFi hotspot

The BMW iX is the BMW Group's technology flagship and is a real world first in terms of connectivity. This is where 5G and eSIM are used for the first time in a series vehicle. In addition to the vehicle eSIM, which is integrated as standard, an additional personal eSIM is integrated, as has been known from smart devices such as tablets or smartwatches. The mobile radio technology built into the vehicle enables both eSIMs to be active at the same time with the full scope of services on 5G (dual-SIM-dual-active). The multi-antenna system of the BMW iX specially developed for 5G routes the radio signal from the performance-optimized multi-band antennas directly to the vehicle's infotainment system via a Gigabit Ethernet connection.

In the future, all passengers will benefit from the improved connection quality and the increased data throughput, because a WiFi hotspot can be activated in the vehicle via the Personal eSIM, via which up to ten devices can surf or stream at 5G speed. At the same time, it is no longer necessary to book an additional, separate mobile phone contract for the vehicle for a hotspot. The vehicle's eSIM can be easily activated with the MobilityConnect option using the Telekom customer's existing mobile phone contract.

“BMW has always been a pioneer in networking mobility. We installed the first SIM card in a vehicle back in 1997. Together with Deutsche Telekom, we are now bringing a completely new level of connectivity into the car for our customers with 5G Personal eSIM, ”says Stephan Durach, Senior Vice President Connected Company Development and Operations BMW Group

Telekom brings the first 5G cellular option for the car

For the first time, Telekom is introducing a special tariff option for integrated connectivity in the vehicle. As soon as the BMW iX is available on the market, Telekom customers can extend their mobile phone contract with the MobilityConnect option for 9,95 euros per month to the BMW iX and later other enabled models.

“Telekom is the leading network provider in Germany - both in mobile communications and in the fixed network. With our new MobilityConnect mobile radio option, we are bringing 5G connectivity into a vehicle as standard for the first time. Our best 5G network makes premium connectivity like in the BMW iX possible. In this way, we are creating completely new applications for Telekom customers in the entertainment and infotainment sector and enabling cars to be increasingly networked, ”explains André Almeida, Managing Director of Private Customers at Telekom Deutschland.

Simply book via the app

The booking can be started very easily in the vehicle and the customer is guided step by step via the My BMW app or the Telekom customer center to conclude the contract. When booking the tariff option, the eSIM is activated for the vehicle. After a minimum term of one year, the tariff option can then be canceled daily. Families can book the digital services at short notice, for example for the upcoming vacation trip by car. The mobile radio option for the car should also be bookable for other vehicle models this year.

Personal eSIM can be transferred to other qualified vehicles

Once the Personal eSIM has been activated with the MobilityConnect option, the personal driver settings are not only saved in the car, but also with the BMW ID. This means that customers can take the Personal eSIM settings with them into other enabled vehicles by activating the BMW ID. The Personal eSIM is automatically activated in the vehicle when the BMW ID is registered and is immediately available. In this way, customers turn every 5G-capable BMW (including rental or loan vehicles) into their networked device.
