Not just tuning reason! Wide tires help save money!

If you take a Golf as an example, the Golf 1974 with 1 saw blades was born in 145. If you take a current Golf 7, 205 or 225 wide tires are also installed as standard. If one were to share the views from earlier, VW would tune the cars in the production version from the factory. Because in the past, a wide tire was called automatic -> tuning!

If you look at the tires of the former Golf 1 these days you might think it was a spare. Of course, the VW Golf here is not an isolated case but the rule. Throughout, you can see the trend towards wider tires for all manufacturers. The main reason for the wider tires are the technical needs of the new vehicles. A current Golf weighs about twice as much today as it did before 40 years ago. Driving dynamics were then used wider tires to achieve higher speeds, for example, in the curve, the same goal is now also ex-factory.

After all, you want to be more dynamic and faster with a Golf 7 than with a Golf 1. The wider a car tire is the more it has grip and that is advantageous both when accelerating and when braking.

More width = more traction

A standard tire from the 70er years was allowed to run a maximum of 210km / h, today this day pretty much any tire. Currently the maximum speed levels for standard tires are 360km / h. The larger tire width can also be responsible for more fuel consumption, problem is just the more rubber rests and thus more rolling resistance is caused. However, as the development does not stop, for example, the mentioned rolling resistance has been reduced by 30 percent over time.

In 2000, for example, a 185 tire produced 11,7 CR resistance, today it is only 8,6 CR. In 2014, a 225/45 R17 tire achieved a CR value of just 7,9. Basically, the bigger the wheel, the smaller the impression area, and thus the rolling resistance decreases.

Less rolling resistance = less fuel

So if you want to save fuel, you would theoretically have to buy 20-inch tires - again, it is very questionable whether the significantly higher purchase price brings in the fuel savings. Nevertheless, it is remarkable that a tire has up to 20% influence on the consumption of the car. The common tire sizes 205-225 in 16-17-18 inches have the best price-performance ratio. The best results are currently provided by the tires of e-cars, narrower treads, lower dead weight and large wheel sizes of up to 20 inches currently achieve the best CR values. You can visualize the whole thing by comparing a racing bike tire. Advantage here:

  • big time
  • narrow
  • hard pumped up

Due to these properties, the tire of the racing bike has a small contact area and the best efficiency. As an example image I took a picture of the tires of my racing bike. Ok the last 1000km have left their mark ... 😉

Of course that had not happened yet!
