At the latest with the Fridays for Future movement, led by the Swede Greta Thunberg, the climate debate has reached the center of society. The devastating bush fires in Australia, which have now devastated an area larger than that of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg combined, continue to fuel the debate about global warming that is accelerated by humans. So it is no wonder that more and more governments, companies and private individuals are trying to change their actions for the good of the planet. The main reason for the rapid warming of the climate is the high level of CO2 emissions. The greenhouse gas arises particularly through the use of fossil fuels, the clearing of the rainforests and the raising of cattle.

Formula 1 has now recognized that it is time to change something. The racing series is aware of its role and wants to become CO2030 neutral by 2. To achieve this, drastic steps are necessary. Next year there will be a total of 22 seasonal races on almost every continent. The Formula 1 team jets with huge amounts of personnel and equipment every two weeks from race track to race track. During the weekends, the high-powered cars also burn thousands of liters of special gasoline. There are also test drives, fan events, merchandise items and other items that damage the climate. But this should change now. Board member Chase Carey said that carbon dioxide reduction projects would start immediately and Formula 1 events should be sustainable as early as 2025.

How exactly Formula 1 intends to offset the high CO2 production is not yet known. Although it was announced that single-use plastic would be banned, rubbish would be reused, recycled or composted, and fans would be “greener”, it was the logistics of the racing series in particular that were responsible for the majority of greenhouse gas emissions. Of the approximately 250.000 tons of carbon dioxide emitted, only about 1 percent can be traced back to the combustion of gasoline in the racing cars. So the hybrid engines of the racing series are the little evil. They are considered efficient and have a relatively small carbon footprint in relation to performance.

The makers of the motorsport class want to try to establish an "ultra-efficient logistics" and choose the most environmentally friendly transport options. However, it is clear to everyone that the crew and materials cannot be sailed from continent to continent by sailboat and that many thousands of tons will still be emitted by Formula 2030 in 1. In order to create a balance between carbon dioxide emissions and CO2 taken from the atmosphere, Formula 1 will probably have to resort to climate compensation projects. Reforestation is the top priority for scientists here, since trees and other plants extract CO2 from the atmosphere during photosynthesis to produce oxygen. How exactly Formula 1 wants to implement and control this is still completely unclear.

With Lewis Hamilton, the racing series already has the ideal ambassador for the new direction. The World Cup favorite has been committed to environmental protection for several years. Not only is he vegan, but he has also sold his private jet. He realizes that many observers are skeptical and that his carbon footprint is significantly higher than that of a normal citizen, but one should therefore “not be afraid to talk about ways for positive change.”
