Particularly robust - what is a powder coating?

A powder coating is applied as a powder in a completely dry form. It is almost a color in which the solvent content has been removed. The coating is applied electrostatically with a gun and then cured under heat, forming a hard protective coating. It is mainly used for coating metals such as aluminum profiles, household appliances, bicycle and car parts and drum accessories. Technological developments and advances have led to excellent properties of powder coatings.

How does the powder coating work?

Powder coatings are based on polymer resin systems combined with curing agents, pigments, leveling agents and other additives. Additives are additives that are added to a substance to improve certain properties. These ingredients are melted, cooled and ground to a uniform powder. This mixture is similar to baking flour. The process of electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) applies the powder coating to the surface. In this method, a spray gun is used. This gun adds an electrostatic charge to each powder particle, which attracts the powder particles to the grounded part. After applying the powder coating, the particles come into a curing oven.

Here, by adding heat and chemicals, long chains of molecules are created, leading to a higher density. The resulting molecular chains are very resistant. This type of application is the most common method of applying powder. Powder coatings can also be applied to non-metallic materials such as plastics and fiberboard (MDF). Sometimes a powder coating is going through fluidization applied. fluidize is used in fluidized bed technology. Small particles (bulk material) are loosened by the addition of air, mixed and applied to the surface. Preheated particles are dipped in a funnel and applied to the construct. Depending on the mass and temperature of the particles and the type of powder used, post cure may be required. It does not matter which process technology is used, powder coatings are easy to use, environmentally friendly, cost effective and robust.

the durability of the powder coating

A powder coating protects the roughest and hardest machines in daily use. The surface is much more resistant in contrast to color and looks better visually. Powder coated products are more resistant to moisture, chemicals, ultraviolet light and other extreme weather conditions. The risk of scratches, chipping, abrasion, corrosion, and other wear processes is significantly reduced. Powder coating is not only durable, but also an attractive choice due to its environmental benefits.

  1. Thank you for an interesting contribution to powder coating. Good to know that the powder-coated surface is much more stable than color. I will be happy to try this method for my bicycle accessories.

I had never heard of the powder coating process and find it very interesting. Especially how it happens with electrostatic charges. Physics makes my heart beat faster and since I am currently looking for an apprenticeship this could be the right direction.

My brother has to repaint his car because it is very old and has a lot of scratches. It is therefore very interesting that powder coating should be so long-lasting. Thank you for the information. I will share that with him.
