[Update: 29.10.2023] This post was updatedto take more recent information into account. Resetting / eliminating the message from the tire pressure monitoring system yourself is usually easy. This is necessary after about tire changewhen a TPMS sensor has been replaced or when the system has been put into operation for the first time (e.g. when retrofitting). Today we would like to explain how you can reset or fix the message from the tire pressure monitoring system. All you need is a little patience and a few small steps. Many people who pick up their vehicle from the workshop after changing the tires are familiar with this problem. But most people only notice it after several kilometers, when they have already left the workshop.
Resetting TPMS – What do I have to do?
After the first few minutes of driving, the tire pressure monitoring system light begins to illuminate. Many people ask themselves the question “What can I do?” For many people, driving all the way back to the workshop is out of the question. We would like to explain how you can switch off the message from the tire pressure monitoring system yourself.
- Open the menu via the on-board computer
- Under Settings, select the option: Driver assistance
- The tire pressure monitoring system is located there
- Press and hold the Ok button to save the tire pressure.
- You will receive a message that the data has been saved successfully.
If the message or the lamp lights up repeatedly, there is another Workshop visit but usually unavoidable. Visit the workshop you trust and explain your concern. Often times it's just a minor thing that an experienced mechanic can easily fix. So you can continue driving without danger or worry. Below are a few more instructions (video / text) for known vehicle types.
Tip: The way of resetting is often the same for different types of a manufacturer. In other words, just as the system is reset in a G30 5-series BMW, it is also reset in a G11 / G12 7-series or a G20 3-series. Older and newer generations of vehicles hardly differ either. And as a rule, the corresponding setting, resetting, can also be made directly from the information in the vehicle's display.

FAQ: Resetting the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
1. Can you program TPMS sensors?
- Yes, TPMS sensors can be programmed. Programming the sensors can be carried out before installation in the rim. This works wirelessly via radio with a TPMS programming device. It is important to mark the new sensors correctly and then mount them in the correct axis position. For successful programming, for example with Carly, you should turn the ignition key to the “On” position without starting the engine and follow the instructions on the OBD device.
2. How can you train TPMS?
- Learning the TPMS sensors takes place after installation on the vehicle. This can be done manually by entering the sensor codes in the OBD “Tire Pressure Monitoring System” menu or using an activator. The data must then be confirmed in the control unit.
3. How expensive is TPMS training?
- For a set of wheels, the costs in organizations such as ADAC and TÜV Süd are between 250 and 300 EUR for the sensors. In addition, there is around EUR 50 for installation and programming in a specialist workshop.
4. What to do if TPMS lights up?
- If the TPMS warning light lights up, it signals a pressure loss of at least 25% in one or more tires. In such a case, you should check your tires to be on the safe side.
5. Does a TPMS sensor have a battery?
- Yes, the sensors of the directly measuring TPMS draw their energy from batteries, which have to be replaced after around six to ten years.
6. How long does it take to reset the TPMS?
- An RDC reset is required after new wheels have been fitted, approximately 8 Minutesso that the vehicle can recognize the new signals.
7. How long does the battery in the TPMS last?
- The sensor batteries have an estimated lifespan of 5-7 years.
8. Where is the tire pressure sensor located?
- The sensors are usually attached to the valve inside the tire or on its rim.
9. What does initializing tire pressure mean?
- Reinitializing the tire pressure reference value is an additional service to detect possible sudden pressure losses.
10. What is the difference between TPMS and TPMS?
- There is no functional difference. TPMS and TPMS are two different names for the same system.
11. Are all aluminum rims suitable for TPMS?
- Yes, regardless of the presence of a tire pressure monitoring system, you can mount any rim that suits your vehicle.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it!
