Battery change made easy - without any training!

The battery in a vehicle is often neglected but extremely important. Especially now that winter is approaching. But even if, for example, you turn the car on a lighter starter battery If you want to convert, you inevitably have to deal with the topic vehicle battery and vehicle electronics deal with. Because modern vehicles like to have according to the manufacturer a problem if the battery is simply removed and another one is installed. Incidentally, if you can believe the ADAC breakdown statistics, then the most common cause of broken down vehicles is the car battery. This is justified with too few kilometers driven or simply with age. If you drive too little, the alternator cannot supply the battery with sufficient power. If it is too old, it will no longer do its job as intended.

more and more electronics in the car

And the immense electronics on board of current vehicles - compared to earlier times - cause a significantly higher load on the battery. We also recommend battery types such as AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) or EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery), which are used specifically as starter batteries for boats, for example. Due to the suitability for this, the battery types are also increasingly used in vehicles with start-stop mode. Often the power supply in the car is not optimal, so that the battery fails and the breakdown assistant has to be called in. Afterwards, a trip to the car dealership is apparently necessary so that the battery can be checked, optimized and trained by the manufacturer's own battery management system.

What is the battery management system good for?

The car manufacturers promise a longer battery life with the management system. The background to this statement is that the battery monitoring system registers the starting processes and regulates the power output of the battery to the vehicle. The aim is to extend the service life. The vehicle manufacturers also state that the management system only accepts new batteries with the support of the manufacturer / dealership. The car dealership can use forecasting tools to evaluate the state of the battery at any time. The battery management system controls the charging voltage and the amount of current that the battery delivers to the vehicle at what time. An optimization should take place, which cannot be ensured without a battery management system.

Learning the car battery is mandatory?

What does learning a car battery mean now? The manufacturers state that the data on charging voltage and charging cycles for new batteries in the car must be relearned from the management system. Without deleting the old data, the system falls back on the existing data, which do not optimally match the battery. The disadvantage for the consumer is that learning is only possible at the original dealer with original batteries, ensured by a manufacturer's code system. And of course that all costs a lot of gravel.

Use batteries without training?

It is important that the same type of battery is used. An AGM battery must be replaced by an AGM battery. It is not necessary to select a battery from the vehicle manufacturer. It is possible to use a battery and install it in the vehicle without a corresponding brand. And that is even "mostly" relatively simple. Namely, if you simply install the same battery with the same capacity and drive off! It only takes a few minutes for the battery management system to collect all the data by itself, then the vehicle can be used normally without any restrictions. And while the car may give some warning messages, it is usually possible to drive it. Even without a diagnostic tool or other tools, the management system starts making all settings while driving and adapting them to the new battery. Before the error messages have completely disappeared, you should of course be particularly careful because the messages are unfamiliar and can also affect important systems. Fortunately, they are short-lived in almost all vehicles and even the clock in the car only needs a few minutes to show the correct time again. If necessary, existing errors can also be remedied with a simple OBD diagnostic tool to be deleted.

To summarize the most important information:

  • what the manufacturers say:
    - VW: Vehicles with battery energy management (all models with start-stop technology / BlueMotion) should be taught in. Original battery or original spare part battery and BEM coding are required. Without training or by installing a replacement battery from a third party, there may be restrictions in functionality and increased battery wear.
    - Fiat / Abarth: The starter battery can easily be replaced. It may be necessary to set the date and time again.
    - Alfa Romeo: The starter battery can easily be replaced. It may be necessary to set the date and time again.
    - Audi: Vehicles with battery energy management such as A6, A8, Q7 from 2003/04 and from 2010 almost all models with battery energy management and start-stop function (ultra) must be taught-in. Original battery or original spare part battery and BEM coding are required. Without training or by installing a replacement battery from a third party, there may be restrictions in functionality and increased battery wear.
    - BMW: Registration must be carried out for all start-stop vehicles from 2008 with IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor). Failure to register the battery can lead to overcharging.
    - Citroën: The original battery can be exchanged for a suitable model from a third party at any time. Please check all electrical functions after installation.
  • replacement without the Banner Battery Service Tool (BBST) and without Memory Saver is almost always possible
  • Entering a code is not mandatory
  • However, teaching CAN be an advantage, as the following video shows!
  • Before you completely replace the battery, it can be worthwhile to try a so-called battery pulse. All information is available here.

Summary information to check the car battery:

  • Check the battery with a voltmeter
    - Switch off the ignition
    – Remove the connection protection from the positive pole of the battery (clean the battery poles if necessary)
    – Connect the positive cable from the voltmeter to the positive pole of the battery (the positive cable on the voltmeter is usually red)
    – connect the negative cable of the voltmeter to the negative terminal of the battery
    – Voltage should be between 12,4 and 12,7 volts
    – Reading below 12,4V means the battery needs to be charged
    – Charge the battery to “trickle charge” (then check again)
    – Values above 12,9 V indicate excess voltage (remove the excess surface charge using high beams, heated seats, etc.)
  • an overvoltage can be an indication that the alternator is overcharging the battery
  • Check the battery with a test lamp
    - Switch off the ignition
    – Remove the connection protection from the positive pole of the battery (clean the battery poles if necessary)
    – Connect the positive cable of the test lamp to the positive pole of the battery (the positive cable of the test lamp is usually red)
    – Connect the negative cable of the test lamp to the negative pole of the battery
    – Hold the tip of the test lamp to the positive pole of the battery
    – Read the voltage display on the test lamp - the voltage should be between 12,4 and 12,7 volts
    – Reading below 12,4V means the battery needs to be charged
  • Check the battery by starting the engine
    – Start the engine (turn the ignition key until the starter turns on)
    - Hold for two seconds
    – A second person checks the battery voltage drop
    – Check the display on the test lamp at the time of starting
    – the value should not fall below 9,6 V
    – if this is the case, the battery will sulphate and will not hold any voltage
  • Info: Never short-circuit battery poles. Severe burns, damage to the poles and even a hydrogen gas explosion can occur.
