The subject bioethanol is a controversial topic in the German car world and especially in the tuning scene it causes some unrest. But first of all, what is bioethanol (Bio-ethanol E85) at all? Bioethanol is an alcohol that consists solely of biomass or biodegradable waste. Its processing is exclusively for the production of fuels, such as E10. Approximately 93% of cars in Germany tolerate this without any problems, but a considerable sum of 3 million vehicles does not tolerate bioethanol. This figure should not be taken lightly, as the unauthorized use of ethanol can cause considerable damage. However, there are countless cases since the fuel E10 was allowed in the year 2010 in Germany, in which there was engine damage due to the wrong fuel. However, the damage was almost always on vehicles that were NOT designed for E10.
Damage is always there
The reason is the ethanol content in the fuel. At elevated temperatures, this becomes so-called alcoholates, which have the property of attacking aluminum. This then leads after some time to corrosion, so the decomposition of the metal. Another danger are pipes and gaskets in cars, which are also brittle due to the high proportion of ethanol. In extreme cases, this can lead to a fire in the engine compartment, which can have extreme consequences. Experts warn about these problems after the first use. Although the liter price is cheaper in most cases than normal gasoline, but the total consumption of your car is also higher due to the lower energy share. Thus, in most cases, the performance of the car suffers from the fuel. The biggest problem, however, is that most vehicles do not have a clear label as to whether they tolerate ethanol or not.
Tuners hardly focus on bioethanol
A myth is that the age of the car provides information, but newer cars with gasoline direct injection (e.g. FSI engines) from Audi are also characterized by intolerance. There are lists on the Internet in which all cars with intolerance are entered, but if you do not have them ready and have accidentally filled up with E10, it is advisable to have the tank pumped out so as not to take any risks. But why is it worth refueling with bioethanol despite these extensive dangers? Since gasoline and diesel are fossil fuels and therefore only available to a limited extent, bioethanol offers a serious alternative.
In addition, CO2 emissions are significantly lower with this fuel. But not only the environment but also you can take advantage of yourself. With a fuel-efficient driving style, the somewhat cheaper price per liter certainly does the purse well. Whether you're fueling bioethanol or not is up to you, it can have a positive impact on the environment. But you should first check if your car is compatible.
