One of the main problems with renewable energies and a popular argument of their opponents is the question of energy storage. The amount of electricity produced depends on nature and does not always correspond to the amount of electricity used by humans. This often creates fluctuations in the power grid, which make a complete switch to renewable energy still too inefficient. Mercedes-Benz Energy GmbH has now launched a cooperation with Andritz AG to address the problem of energy storage. This brings together many years of know-how in hydropower and battery technology. More options are probably only available at PlayAmo Casino.

A new way of recycling

In addition to the usual way of recycling your raw materials such as lithium, nickel, platinum, cobalt and rare earths as individual components, the lithium-ion battery as a whole now has another function - as a stationary energy storage device. When used as a stationary energy storage device, the low power losses that make the used lithium-ion batteries unusable for use in electric vehicles are initially negligible. As a result, the energy storage device can continue to be used for up to 10 years. This further use of the lithium-ion modules means that their economic use can be doubled.

Fluctuations in the power grid can be compensated for

Since the energy stored in the batteries can be made available quickly, it offers power plant owners and operators new opportunities to compensate for the effects of volatile electrical feed-in that can arise when operating power plants using renewable energy. At the same time, the service life of the mechanical components can be extended, since the coupling of the hydropower plant with a battery storage system means that significantly fewer adjustment movements are required on the mechanics of the hydropower plant. In addition, the hybrid solution opens up new approaches for the provision of network services.

The use as stationary energy storage offers a wide range of possibilities

According to the company, the battery solution can be used in all types and sizes of hydropower plants. The type of turbine, for example, is irrelevant. The stationary energy storage systems cover a range from 200 kWh to 10 MWh and can be installed in new systems as well as retrofitted in existing systems. Dr. Martin Zimmermann, Head of Global Service & Parts Mercedes-Benz Cars, comments: "The battery is one of the most valuable components in an electric vehicle. Keeping them in circulation for as long as possible is therefore also crucial for the profitability of locally emission-free driving.“The continued use of the energy storage system will both extend its service life and increase the ecological footprint of Mercedes-Benz.

About Thomas Wachsmuth

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
