Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

Chiptuning of vehicles is also known as performance tuning. But what happens if there is not only one chip tuning, but also an additional one tuningbox is clamped in front of the engine control unit? Are there any error messages? Does the increase in performance cancel out? Is it possible to increase performance again? This question is answered below with various assumptions.

Chiptuning + box = performance increase?

Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

Clamping a tuning box in front of the engine control unit if OBD chip tuning has already taken place and the corresponding software has been installed on the engine control unit is generally accepted not recommendable. The question is, what would happen then? Will there be another increase in performance, would the increase in performance be canceled out, or are there possibly error messages? There are various assumptions for this, and below the less likely assumptions are summarized as well as the most likely.

Assumption 1 - stronger programming prevails

Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

This means with a control unit programming that has a lower boost pressure than the tuning box, the programming of the tuning box would be taken over. Conversely, with a lower boost pressure in the tuning box, the programming of the engine control unit would be taken over.
Speaks against this assumption However, that a tuning box cannot change any maps and thus would not be able to "take over". A tuning box is able to manipulate measurement data. But actually not more!

Assumption 2 - there is an increase in performance

Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

If the tuning box is connected between the engine control unit and the rail pressure sensor, the tuning box will measure a certain rail pressure and transmit the manipulated data to the engine control unit. For example, with a measured rail pressure of 250 bar, a significantly lower pressure can be passed on to the engine control unit. As a result, the control unit assumes that the rail pressure is too low and tries to increase it. Even after chip tuning and with optimized maps, it should still work. When assuming the increase in performance, it is assumed that the performance adds up. But is that really the case?
Speaks against this assumptionthat there is an enormous component load and not necessarily an increase in performance. For this, the interested tuner has to be aware of how chip tuning and tuning boxes work.

What happens with chip tuning?

With chip tuning, the maps change in the engine control unit. However, due to the new programming of the control unit, the new maps are firmly integrated. The engine control unit works after good chip tuning as if the software were original. The performance is increased by the chip tuning and the load on individual components (boost pressure, rail pressure, injection quantity, etc.) already increases.

What does a tuning box do?

A tuning box actually only manipulates the values that arrive at the control unit. This means that it forwards a lower charging or rail pressure to the engine control unit, for example. The engine control unit tries to take countermeasures and increase the values so that an increase in performance occurs.

Assumption 3: An error message appears

Chiptuning and an extra tuning box, what happens?

If it is assumed that the tuning box reports a lower rail or boost pressure to the engine control unit, then an engine control unit with chip tuning will also react to the manipulated values and will try to increase the performance. It can therefore be assumed that the increase in performance is added, but this does not necessarily work. An increase in performance already achieved through chip tuning leads to a load on vehicle components. If a tuning box is connected in front of it, the boost pressure is too high. Furthermore, the injection duration is extended. As a result, an error message is output that leads to an emergency run.
