Brigade Electronics shows predictive collision detection system!

Brigade Electronics, the market leader in vehicle security systems, has launched a new predictive collision detection system. Sidescan®Predict is the next generation of collision warning devices. The aim was to work with the University of Cambridge's Knowledge Transfer Partnership to develop a cost-effective and reliable collision detection system that can intelligently identify potential collisions, issue early warnings, and give the driver sufficient time to intervene accordingly. In short: a forward-looking system.

the Sidescan®Predict system

After more than seven years of development and rigorous tests, including 10.000 hours of research, the first attempts with the Sidescan®Predict in 2020 met with a very positive response from drivers. These recorded a significantly reduced risk of collisions with endangered road users and static objects. Sidescan®Predict uses artificial intelligence to continuously record object recognition data such as the speed and distance of a cyclist or other endangered road user in the vicinity of the truck. Additional technology embedded in the Sidescan®Predict system collects information such as the speed, direction, acceleration and turning speed of a vehicle.

Using this data and an algorithm developed by Brigade, the system then calculates the risk of collision with cyclists and pedestrians in the vicinity of the vehicle. In addition, the system always remains active even at speeds below 30 km / h, does not depend on the indicators and cannot be deactivated by the driver. The system is designed for most solid body vehicles including box trucks, dump trucks, mixers, and buses that are a minimum of 5,2 m in length. It includes six sensors with a detection range of 2,5 m, versus an industry standard of 1 to 1,5, 84 m. These features reduce the risk of death by an additional XNUMX%.

Features and benefits of Sidescan®Predict

  • Sidescan®Predict is always active, even at speeds below 30 km / h. Above all, however, the collision protection is not linked to the indicator. This is particularly important because it is known that some drivers are unsettled by repeated false alarms and therefore avoid flashing in order not to trigger alarms, which in turn represents a risk for endangered road users.
  • Automatic brightness control means that Sidescan®Predict adjusts to the lighting conditions in the driver's cab so that the visual warning is not lost among the many illuminated displays in a modern truck cab.
  • Sidescan®Predict can be retrofitted to existing vehicles, and the configuration software (a key performance feature) includes several system tests to ensure that the sensors are correctly installed and positioned. This provides additional security.
  • In the event of a system malfunction, an optical alarm is triggered in the driver's cab.
  • The system is offered at a competitive price and comes complete in a box, including a user manual (also available online) and training video.
  • Installation time is around six hours and the system can be integrated with other Brigade products to form a complete solution. Additional speed and flashing switches are not required, which reduces system and installation costs.
  • These next-generation sensors have a wider detection area, thereby reducing risk.

John Osmant, Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH, commented: “In contrast to existing systems that simply register the presence of a potential obstacle, Sidescan®Predict continuously records data in the area around the vehicle. This offers additional advantages for drivers because it significantly reduces the number of false alarms and increases confidence in the reliability of the warnings. We are very pleased to add Sidescan®Predict to our portfolio of safety systems for commercial vehicles and are convinced that this solution will have a positive impact on safety and the number of deaths on roads and construction sites.
