Good treatment of the turbocharger leads to a long service life! The turbocharger on the engine is exposed to high loads during operation. The turbo has to withstand up to 1.000 degrees Celsius and up to 300.000 revolutions per minute under full load. The turbocharger is basically designed to achieve the same service life as the engine. To do this, however, the manufacturer's operating and service instructions must be strictly adhered to. If these are deviated from or due to environmental errors, the turbocharger can be damaged and thus give up the ghost even before the engine.

How can you extend the life of the turbocharger in everyday operation?

If an engine is switched off at high speed, the turbocharger will continue to run for a short time. During this time, the lubrication of the turbocharger is no longer ensured. Before switching off the engine should therefore still be for about 20 seconds run at low speed. At the same time, when the engine is started, it should run for about 30 seconds before driving off. This is the time it takes to create full oil pressure in the oil circuit.

By the Warm up extreme temperature differences can be avoided. This enables the engine and the turbocharger to cope better with the load. Likewise, the car should after a journey with a heavy load not put on hot. In order to avoid wear and tear due to the intermittent cooling and the build-up of accumulated heat, the vehicle should be driven "cold" again.

Early detection prevents major damage to the turbocharger

If you notice oil leaks, vibrations or unnatural noises from the turbocharger, the engine should be turned off immediately. The reasons for a malfunction are often easy to rectify if they are discovered early on. Otherwise serious consequential damage can occur. The extremely high speed of the turbocharger means that even minor damage can easily be transferred to other components. In the event of insufficient lubrication, the bearings of a turbocharger can fail within a few seconds.

Common reasons for damage to the turbocharger:

  1. Impurities in the oil caused by fuel, dirt or water
  2. Insufficient supply with oil due to insufficient oil pressure or faulty filter
  3. foreign body, the z. B. penetrate into the turbine or the compressor
  4. Too high Exhaust temperaturesthat cause the turbocharger to overheat

If you familiarize yourself with your turbocharger, you can identify many errors at an early stage. With caution and prevention, you can significantly increase the service life of the turbocharger.
