E-Coating - also known as Electrophoretic Painting, Electrocoating, Electropainting, etc. - is a high-tech process that has been developed over the past fifty years. The e-coat process was originally developed for applying an anti-corrosion coating to steel bodies. E-coats are used to coat a wide variety of consumer products, including hardware, jewelry, eyeglass frames, gifts and, more recently, automobiles as part of vehicle refinement.

How does e-coating work?

The coating materials (resins, pigments, additives, etc.) are dispersed in water and kept in a bath. The body parts to be coated are immersed in the solution and an electric current is passed through the bath using the parts as an electrode. Electrical activity on the surface of the parts makes the resin in direct contact insoluble in water. As a result, a resin layer - including all pigments and additives present - adheres to the surface of the parts. The coated auto parts can then be removed from the bath. The freshly coated car parts are then placed in an oven to harden. This makes the coating hard and durable.

Advantages of the electropainting process

immersion method: All surfaces that come into contact with the solution are coated. This means that even the most complex shapes can be coated completely and evenly. The application of electricity deposits resins and other components on the surface of the parts. By controlling the electrical current, a predictable and consistent coating thickness can be applied. This is essential when “tinted” coatings are required - for example the colors “brass” or “gold” over nickel or zamak. Consistent color effect requires consistent thickness. Process based on water: There are no flammability problems in the application. It is also not necessary to dry parts after water-based cleaning or pretreatment processes.

Further advantages of e-coating when tuning

The coating materials make the machined part highly corrosion resistant. Good edge protection and excellent gloss depth dispersion are guaranteed. The substances used are usually tin-free. In addition, they require a low firing temperature for curing. Electropainting process is characterized in particular by the optimal mechanical resistance.
