Controversy and intense competition: has F1 finally gotten exciting again?

[Display]

It's fair to say that not many people would recognize Esteban Ocon if they saw him on the street. But the young Frenchman recently wrote his name into the history books by winning the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Usually drivers like Ocon don't win Grand Prix races. Formula 1 has been dominated by a few teams and drivers in recent years, and the smaller teams (Ocon drives for Alpine-Renault) have to fight for the remainder of the leading group.

This season, however, Formula 1 has a different aura - the feeling that anything can happen. Ocon's win came as a surprise, yes, but it has been a season of shocks so far. There were accidents and controversies, arguments between the drivers and disputes between the team owners. Formula 1 is spirited and fun, and the fans seem to be enjoying it.

Hamilton dominates F1

Formula 1 obviously has a very loyal following. But fans were quick to point out that the competition has not been as intense in recent years. The dominance of Lewis Hamilton and his team, Mercedes, has meant that the battle for the world championship is already halfway through the season.

Hamilton started this season as the clear favorite to win the world championship. Everyone thought he would stroll to his 5th consecutive title, breaking Michael Schumacher's record in the process. But although he is still the favorite according to Mr Green's sports betting odds, his lead over Max Verstappen is now only narrow. At this point, it wouldn't surprise anyone if Verstappen won for Team Red Bull.

A rivalry at the top of F1

But regardless of who wins the championship, the fact that we have a fight at the top is important to the entertainment value of the sport. Hamilton and Verstappen have become bitter rivals, and he gives it Formula 1 an additional dimension that has been missing in recent years. The rivalry isn't quite on the level of James Hunt and Nikki Lauda or Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost, but it gives an emotional kick to a sport that has long been lacking in emotion.

Just think of the British Grand Prix in July and the collision that caused Verstappen to retire from the race. Verstappen and Red Bull were furious at Hamilton's behavior and post-race celebrations. Since then, the two have repeatedly insulted each other. It brought what fans want to see – drama.

We don't know what will happen between now and the end of the season. But if you don't want to see Formula 1 anymore because it's gotten like that over the past few years then it might be worth taking a look at. The pressure seems to be getting on with the drivers and teams and that brings in the actions that sports fans want to see. To put it simply: Formula 1 has become exciting again.
