How high definition improves fleet management

Security cameras on commercial vehicles are now ubiquitous. From 360-degree protection to vehicle video surveillance, cameras have made a significant contribution to reducing accidents and injuries, making fleets and drivers safer, and protecting vulnerable road users from harm. Due to the size of commercial vehicles, blind spots are a significant factor in collisions, no matter the industry. Driver positions, bulky superstructure and lack of rear windows all limit the driver's view. The installation of cameras, whether factory or retrofit, has proven to be a valuable asset in preventing collisions, protecting equipment from damage and minimizing associated costs and downtime. It is now recognized around the world that commercial vehicle safety systems, including cameras, play a key role in preventing deaths and injuries on the road and at work. In fact, many traffic and workplace safety initiatives, such as Turn Assist, involve equipping vehicles with cameras. While preventing deaths and injuries on the road and on the job is undoubtedly a priority for fleet operators, protecting their equipment and ensuring efficient fleet operations is just as important. Cameras with 360 degree coverage combined with vehicle video surveillance can make a tremendous contribution to better fleet management and vehicle safety.

The advent of high-definition (HD) expands these options for security cameras.

How high definition improves fleet management

John Osmant, Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH, a market-leading provider of safety products and solutions for commercial vehicles and construction machinery: "High-definition cameras, such as e.g. Equipment such as Brigade's Backeye®360 HD BN360-300 provides complete safety for drivers and fleet managers by eliminating blind spots and serving as a reliable eyewitness in the event of an accident, theft or fraudulent insurance claims. Delivering clearer, sharper images for drivers and operators, HD increases safety and is invaluable as a result.” Survey data collected by Brigade shows that its vehicle video surveillance has been effective in reducing injury claims and insurance costs. According to the survey of drivers, fleet managers and other industry representatives, 29% of them saw fewer injury claims and 32% saw a reduction in insurance costs.

Vehicle video surveillance - high definition vs. standard resolution

High-definition means that the driver receives a high-resolution image that allows objects or people in the vehicle's blind spot to be seen clearly and in detail on the screen. The main difference between high definition and standard definition is the number of pixels, or dots, in the displayed image. HD images contain more pixels per unit area than SD, which means that an HD system offers more detail. A dot density of at least 720p is usually considered HD. “Brigade recommends the use of analogue rather than digital HD cameras as they offer many advantages for commercial vehicle drivers,” Osmant continues. “They can transmit video over distances of up to 500 meters using conventional cables – more than sufficient for any type of commercial vehicle. Also, they have zero video latency, so drivers see everything on the monitor in real time.”
