Formula 1 is a sport that inspires fans on different levels. The top speed achieved by F1 cars is comparable to that of IndyCars or MotoGP and ranks higher than any other racing series, including NASCARs. During the season, the drivers experience how the fans follow them everywhere and passionately celebrate the superiority of the team. The fastest Formula 1 cars have the best balance of engine, chassis and aerodynamics. Running such a Formula 1 team costs a lot of money and teams with huge budgets obviously have a massive advantage over the competition. Nevertheless, a large budget does not automatically mean that the team will ultimately win a race. The following article analyzes the various factors why Formula 1 cars are the best racers.

The F1 engine is a critical factor

Formula 1 cars are extremely advanced machines. A good engine that has a lot of power and high reliability is of course a major advantage. The Mercedes engine is currently considered the best in this field. However, that is not the only factor that makes a Formula 1 car faster. Manufacturers and suppliers of F1 engines are constantly working on the development of high-performance engines in order to achieve even higher performance. However, the weight of the engine must not increase any further. The best motors achieve high performance, but are still small and light in weight.

Aerodynamics can affect the performance of an F1 car!

Controlling the airflow around the Formula 1 car is the factor that affects the speed of the car. Before the cost cap was introduced, teams would spend enormous amounts of money to gain millisecond benefits. The essential function of aerodynamics is to generate downforce, unlike the wings of airplanes, which provide lift. Because a car with a high level of downforce maintains its high speed in the long and often repeatedly curved corners.

When accelerating, the front rises slightly, when braking, the nose lowers. When cornering, lateral forces cause the vehicle to lean to the left or right. Within these ranges, the car's aerodynamic modules must keep downforce as linear and predictable as possible. The aerodynamics are therefore tested in the wind tunnel, which is very expensive to operate. Before the introduction of the cost cap, the top teams had a particularly high budget. It's relatively balanced now. But since 2021 and especially with the new designs in 2022, aerodynamicists have been faced with new challenges.
