Extra power and transmission - adjustments to control unit and Co.

Chip tuning, compressor conversions or more power through exhaust modifications - for many car fans, more horsepower means more driving fun. But hobby tuners in particular are rightly concerned about the higher load on gearboxes and co. Can the gearbox handle the extra torque?

Transmission - an important system in the drive train

The transmission is as important in the powertrain as the engine. Because the transmission is responsible for the distribution of power from the engine to the wheels. There are automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, dual clutch transmissions, sequential racing transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and others.

Transmission Control Module

Nothing works without suitable software today. The transmission control unit thus takes over important tasks in the interaction between engine and transmission. A transmission control unit is an intelligent control software that can act on switching times or can adapt the switching behavior to the road situation. Via so-called Can-Bus connections, the transmission control unit is connected to other control units, the various systems can communicate with each other and adapt. For chip tuning, for example, it is also possible and customary for the gearbox control unit to be adapted to the additional power. There are also various updates for the software to adjust the control unit. This varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and must be checked if necessary.

Beware of thermal overload

Of course, in some cases it may be necessary to adapt the hardware to the PS-Plus, because with a significant increase in power, the gear can overheat and thermally overload due to the high torque. Cooling helps: installing an improved oil cooler or transmission gearbox cooler may prevent overheating. It may also be helpful to replace the differential to achieve optimum gear ratio. There are many ways to adapt the transmission to the extra power. Which in your case is the right option, must be considered individually. In any case, it is more than advisable to worry about the transmission, transmission control unit and Co. as soon as it comes to a power adjustment. Because then it is guaranteed that more horsepower also means more driving pleasure.
