Autotuning covers all areas of the vehicle. There are technical changes made to the engine, gearbox, axles and the chassis, or the body is structurally altered and painted in the desired color. And last but not least, the interior of the car is adapted to your personal wishes. Tuning is very complex and usually one change leads to the next. Therefore, it is difficult to have a complete picture already at the beginning of the conversion, which should include the tuning everything. However, if you want a new body of course should not only then start when the car is already half done. The new body has to be at the beginning. When tuning the body, you can make the entire shell easier by using composite materials. In the following we will discuss some possibilities.

Use of carbon fiber and glass fiber

GFK and CFK offer themselves as a real alternative to steel, aluminum or even magnesium. GRP and CFRP can be used for smaller components as well as for entire bodies. CFK and GFK are similarly structured. They consist of a matrix, such as individual fibers, particles or fabric mats of glass fiber or carbon fiber, which are then inserted into an epoxy resin. This combination combines the strength and elasticity of both materials.

Advantages CFRP and GFRP

The composites have many advantages over the conventional materials aluminum and steel. They are generally lighter than their competitors and thus can be lighter components and workpieces create, which then reduce the total weight of the object accordingly. GRP and CFRP can take a variety of forms. By using suitable shapes almost all geometric shapes can be produced. GRP and CFRP are extremely hard-wearing. They have high elasticity and high strength at the same time. Thus, they can also be used dynamically well. GRP and CFRP can also be painted at any time in all imaginable colors.

Disadvantages CFRP and GFRP

A disadvantage of CFRP and GRP is that they are very energy consuming to manufacture. Also, their processing is not entirely safe because the resins used release appropriate solvents and the fibers, if inhaled, can be carcinogenic.
In an accident, the GRP and CRP tend to splinter, which in turn means an additional risk of injury. When cutting the GRP or CFRP, toxic dusts can form that can endanger both the rescue teams and the occupants. Even fires produce toxic gases that can lead to health problems. The disposal of GRP and CFK is just as difficult. Due to the materials used this waste is to dispose of separately and that only with considerable effort. Another disadvantage is the rather expensive repair of GRP and CFRP components. They can not simply be glued or screwed together, but must be properly handled and glued again. This costs time and material.

  1. Interesting that GRP and CFRP are a good alternative to steel and aluminum. I damaged the body of my BMW while on holiday and now need to be repaired. I'm going to see a body work expert next month for that.
