Autotuning is a very broad field. From technical tuning, such as improving the engine and other mechanical components to increase performance, and non-technical tuning, which revolves around changes to the body and interior. Correct tuning includes both areas, which together result in a complete tuning object & project. One possibility of technical tuning is the use of heat protection tapes, which we will consider further below.
Types of heat protection tapes
There are different types of heat protection bands. On the one hand, which made of ceramic and which made of natural fibers. These heat protection bands differ on the one hand in their physical property in the field of heat conduction and they also differ in price from cheap to expensive. Heat protection bands are used where there is a lot of heat, mostly in the area of the engine and in the area of the exhaust / elbow. Then there are heat protection tapes that are self-adhesive and heat protection tapes that need to be applied with a thermal compound. Furthermore, there are heat protection tapes for different temperature ranges, but mostly they have a temperature resistance of up to 1000 degrees Celsius.
What are the advantages of heat protection tapes?
Heat protection bands have the advantage that a technically effective change to the vehicle can be carried out by a simple method. Heat protection tapes reduce the heat radiation from hot components to other components and vice versa, heat from the outside of a component, which tolerates no heat tolerates / prevents. An advantage of heat protection tapes is also that they can be easily applied and are relatively inexpensive compared to a heat shield. Heat protection bands can even increase the performance of engines and turbochargers because they increase the efficiency of the turbocharger due to the prevented heat conduction from outside to inside and this can work in cooler temperature ranges. This is an effect of thermodynamics, which can vary from vehicle to vehicle and must always be considered in the respective project.
What are the disadvantages of heat protection bands?
Disadvantage of heat protection tapes, depending on what kind of heat protection tapes have been used, that they dissolve relatively quickly. The use of natural fibers is cheaper, but they do not last as long. The use of heat protection tapes made of ceramic has rather proven, but they are sometimes much more expensive. Another disadvantage of heat protection bands, as opposed to heat shields, is their generally relatively short longevity and ruggedness, they are more prone to weathering and need to be replaced more often. When purchasing heat protection tapes, make sure that they are designed for the expected temperature range. Furthermore, make sure that you ordered the required length, so that you can wrap the heat protection tape in one piece to the corresponding component. You should also pay attention to the quality and not always the cheapest tape. Otherwise, you do not achieve the desired effect and must subsequently switch to a more expensive product which means double the work.
What to look for when buying heat protection tapes?
A good example is the manufacturer FOX from Johanngeorgenstadt. It also announces specific figures and has high-quality thermal insulation for fan and turbo manifolds, turbocharger housings, downpipes and even complete exhaust systems at the start. The component is sent to FOX and there is a combination of up to 1.300 degrees heat-resistant Isulfrax insulation mats in different thicknesses and a welded calotte stainless steel foil (1.4301) on top. So allegedly hot components can be reduced from 500 degrees to only 63 degrees. PS. And don't forget the surrounding cables. You can with Heat protection hoses to be encased. We hope that you the info report on the topic / term Insulating Wrap (further names / keywords: Exhaust wrap, heat shield tape, exhaust tape, thermoband, heat protection) has fallen out of the auto tuning section.
