Surely you will ask yourself what on earth is a "autonomous tuner"!? We can tell you that this category does not "yet" exist, but that might change soon. At least if Stefan Jenzowsky and Tim von Törne from Kopernikus Automotive have their way. The company wants to make automated driving socially acceptable with a retrofit solution. The autonomous tuning kit should be able to be installed independently of the manufacturer and make it possible for the retrofitted vehicle to travel independently on motorways and federal highways. Basically, it is therefore also conceivable that even classic cars can drive autonomously. At least as Step 2, which we will come to later. The startup from Berlin presented its system in a VW Golf MK17 at the 2th 7b Ahead Future Congress and attracted a lot of attention.

The system is trained in such a way that a defensive and particularly careful driving is achieved and all of this should be established after a few kilometers. The first test drive led successfully with a converted VW on June 18.6.2018, XNUMX from Ingolstadt to Wolfsburg. The installation of the kit is pretty easy because the system only needs seven cameras on the vehicle that are connected to a high-performance computer. The system intelligently uses the sensors and actuators already on board, such as the automatic steering function of the parking assistant or the factory radar for the distance cruise control. Such components would of course currently speak against use in an old vehicle. But maybe that's the next step.

about 3.000 € should be planned

With costs around the 3.000 € the system is not even particularly expensive and the integrated free online connection for over-the-air updates and upgrades is included. Other extras such as a middleware with its own app store to use different software variants for different purposes should also be available. The company works together with various startups in other countries who develop self-propelled software to be able to use the system outside of Germany. However, the coverage and regulatory issues still need to be addressed, but as soon as this is the case, Copernicus Automotive would like to offer its system to the consumer. We find the topic and the courage of Copernicus Automotive very interesting and would be pleased to acquire the autonomous retrofit kit soon in the free trade.

Thomas Wachsmuth - He has been an integral part of tuningblog.eu since 2013. His passion for cars is so intense that he invests every available penny in them. While he dreams of a BMW E31 850CSI and a Hennessey 6x6 Ford F-150, he currently drives a rather inconspicuous BMW 540i (G31/LCI). His collection of books, magazines and brochures on the subject of car tuning has now reached such proportions that he himself has become a walking reference work for the tuning scene.  More about Thomas
