The latest release in the Need for Speed racing series has loud PCGH compared to the predecessor NFS: Heat a lesser number of players. That surprises! However, the developer studio plans to release more content soon. And there have even been personal consequences. Since the beginning of December, players have been able to explore the fictional town of Lakeshore in Need for Speed Unbound. Initially, Criterion Games' arcade racing game received high approval on Steam. PC gamers' opinions have been mixed since then. According to SteamDB, there are fewer PC players racing through Lakeshore than in its predecessor, Need for Speed Heat. At the time of writing, 488 Steam players were playing NFS: Unbound, while its predecessor had around 1.245 Steam players (as of 09.03.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX).

The developer studio of Need for Speed Unbound originally announced that new features and game modes would be released in Lakeshore Online in late January 2023. So far, however, there are no signs that this will happen, although there are rumors that it could be as late as March. Since the release of Need for Speed Unbound, five senior employees have left Criterion, including Vice President Matt Webster, Development Director Alan McDairmant, Executive Producer Pete Lake, and Technical Director Andrei Shires. Geoff Smith, who previously worked on the Dirt series and Grid by Codemasters, has been named as the new development lead for Need for Speed. Criterion only took over the helm at NFS again in 2019 after criticism from the developer studio Ghost Games had not commissioned him with any further titles for NFS: Heat.

The waning interest in the traditional NFS series may be due to the lack of new content. And some players might also be put off by the comic-like effects of drifting and boosting. Reviews on Steam show that some gamers find the post-race chases uncomfortable. In addition, some players are bothered by the day-night cycle, as the police seem to forget who was being hunted at night during the day. Since December 2nd, NFS: Unbound is available for PC on Steam, Origin and the Epic Games Store as well as for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on Amazon.
