Opera pop-up drive-in cinema at Tempelhof Airport

As part of the #BMWOPERANEXT initiative by BMW with the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, the opera house will not only play the premiere of Giacomo Puccini's “La fanciulla del West” on June 13 in front of a reduced audience in the hall, but will also broadcast the performance as a live broadcast in the first Berlin opera pop-up drive-in cinema. Advance sales for the parking spaces on the tarmac at Tempelhof Airport begin on Tuesday, June 1st at 12 noon. Emerging from the partnership for “State Opera for All” in Berlin, which has existed since 2007, BMW has been promoting the State Opera Unter den Linden as the official and global main partner since the 2018/2019 season.

The premiere of the opera, which takes place in California during the gold rush, is staged by Lydia Steier, who makes her debut at the State Opera Unter den Linden with this production. The musical direction of the Staatskapelle Berlin is in the hands of Sir Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera House and designated Chief Conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra. The top-class soloist ensemble includes Anja Kampe as Minnie and Marcelo Álvarez as Dick Johnson and Michael Volle in the role of Jack Rance.

Matthias Schulz, Artistic Director State Opera Unter den Linden: “Together with our partner BMW, to whom we are very grateful for their support and openness, we want to make opera an experience for as many people as possible. During the Corona emergency brake, drive-in cinemas were explicitly allowed and so we came up with the idea of having our last premiere of the season take place at an extraordinary location in the city as a live broadcast - in order to use every opportunity for culture and to find new ways to do this and hopefully reach a new audience. So it's all the more beautiful that both can now take place: The premiere in front of an audience in the hall and at the same time a new access through a drive-in cinema! "

The opera pop-up drive-in cinema is an initiative of #BMWOPERANEXT, the joint cooperation between BMW and the State Opera Unter den Linden. Digitization as a core competence of the BMW Group and its global network of experts are used to open up new perspectives and make opera accessible to a younger target group via social media. The initiative has proven itself since 2018 with formats such as #ChangeYourView or #OutOfTheOpera. You can find more information about #BMWOPERANEXT here.

The BMW Group has been involved all over the world for 50 years and also takes social responsibility seriously in the area of culture. With over 100 long-term initiatives in modern and contemporary art, classical music, jazz and sound, as well as architecture and design, cultural funding is firmly established. In the music sector, the commitment is as varied as it is sustainable and ranges from chamber concerts of contemporary music to large-scale programs for cultural education and music education to open-air concerts with renowned opera houses and orchestras. Opera for All is part of a series of open-air concerts that the BMW Group is also holding in Berlin, London and Moscow, enabling hundreds of thousands to enjoy first-class music programs in a relaxed atmosphere.
