Side marker lights (SML or side markers, marker lights, clearance marker, side marker, position lights, etc.) are among the few bulbs on the car, which can legally be additionally attached to the body in Germany. They serve primarily the useful purpose of clearly outlining the width and length of the vehicle, even if it is already stock-dark. This strict division of colors for front, rear and side lighting can be lifesaving in case of doubt. The human eye has already become accustomed to it and relies on it.
