Professional dashcams - an introduction!

Accident fraud has long been a major problem for fleet operators. According to data analyzes from the Insurance Fraud Report 2020, fraudulent accidents and vehicle thefts are the leading types of fraud that have increased during the corona pandemic. Insurance claims can be time consuming and expensive. Often times, in the absence of solid evidence, many companies automatically take the blame on themselves. The result: higher insurance premiums, frustrated drivers and perhaps even unjustified doubts about the company's good reputation.

So what can be done to protect drivers - and companies - from fraudulent accidents? A survey by Brigade Electronics of drivers, fleet managers, and other industry representatives found that cameras and recording devices significantly reduce the number of incidents and injury claims reported. More than half of respondents (56%) said the technology had improved driver behavior and 47% said reported incidents decreased after installation.

Furthermore, 29% of the participants saw fewer injury claims and 32% a reduction in insurance costs. Investing in recording technology for vehicle fleets is clearly an essential protection against insurance fraud, but how do fleet managers find the most effective system among all the dashcam offers on the market? Here, John Osmont, Managing Director of Brigade Elektronik GmbH, provides everything you need to know about professional dashcams.

What kind of professional dash cam do I need?

  • Front dash cams: Individual, forward-facing dash cams such as the DC-101-000 from Brigade offer excellent protection against fraudulent accidents, which are mostly provoked by the vehicle in front.

  • Front and rear dash cams: These systems offer the same protection as a single camera plus better coverage around the vehicle from a rear-facing camera. Although drivers rarely have to prove their innocence in the event of a rear-end collision, such shots can be a useful backup. These cameras also serve as an effective deterrent against theft and vandalism, especially in the case of freight vehicles.

  • Internal cameras: These cameras are perfect for fleet managers who also need an internal camera aimed at the driver. Recordings can show that the driver was driving with full attention at the time of the accident and provide evidence in the event of a conflict or break-in.

What are the recording options?

There are four primary types of recording, and a high quality professional dash cam system should have all four in one camera:

  1. Continuous recording - activated automatically when the engine is started.
  2. Parking recording - automatically records all processes triggered by the motion detection system when the vehicle is parked.
  3. Event recording - the processes before and after a collision are recorded using the integrated acceleration sensor.
  4. Manual recording - similar to a video camera. You can record events in front of the vehicle, whether while driving or stationary, by simply pressing a button.

What other functions should you watch out for?

Fleet operators who want to better protect themselves against fraudulent insurance claims should definitely choose a camera with a GPS antenna that provides data on the location and speed of the vehicle. Dashcams with a wide field of view and HD resolution are also advantageous, which ensures clear recordings of the entire event and enables faces and license plates to be recognized. Some other recommended features:

  • User interface: The software should be intuitive and easy to use so that you can access video data quickly and easily.
  • Comprehensive Color control for optimized night shots, which is particularly helpful for companies with a lot of night trips.
  • Greater Dynamic rangethat eliminates light spots in recordings.
  • Lockable Box with keyto prevent theft or tampering.
  • An supercapacitorwhich automatically provides a reserve power in the event of a power failure so that no data is lost and recordings are safely stored.

Fleet managers can never completely prevent their vehicles from being involved in fraud attempts - but modern dashcam technology gives companies and drivers the best chance to refute fraudulent claims and protect the company.
