What does it cost to retrofit a tire pressure monitor?

You can retrofit tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) for less than 100 euros. We have the possibilities, the variants and the differences HERE already reported extensively. But now you will learn how to install the sensors and what you need to consider when using them. If the air pressure in a tire is too low, this leads to longer braking distances, worn tires and poor handling within corners and especially when the road is wet. And in addition to increased tire wear, there is also increased fuel consumption. Tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) warn the driver early in the event of a drop in tire pressure so that he can act quickly. The system, also known as "TPMS" (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), is mandatory for new vehicles from November 2014 and for cars with type approval from November 2012. With tire pressure monitoring systems, a distinction is made between a direct and an indirect TPMS.

Advantages and disadvantages of the TPMS

For a car with an earlier type or initial registration there is no obligation to retrofit with a TPMS system. However, it can make sense to retrofit a tire pressure monitor - although it means additional costs for you. After all, the ideal tire pressure is extremely important for driving safety and the service life of the tires. A drop in tire pressure is also a warning signal that a tire is damaged. But do not rely on this technique alone. Measure the air pressure manually on a regular basis. The advantage of the TPMS is that higher fuel consumption is not possible due to incorrect tire pressure. The tire wear is reduced due to the correct tire pressure. The disadvantage is that the sensors have to be relearned on some vehicle types when the tires are changed.

There are the following TPMS systems:

The direct TPMS: The direct tire pressure monitoring system has a pressure or a pressure-temperature sensor. This sits inside the tire on the rim. It sends the current pressure by radio to the receiver inside the car. The direct measuring OEM systems recognize the pressure loss very quickly and warn when the value drops.

The indirect TPMS:
An indirect system compares wheel speeds with the help of sensors installed in vehicles with ABS and ESP are already installed. If the pressure drops, the rolling circumference of a wheel becomes smaller. Its speed increases and the TPMS recognizes the pressure drop. Disadvantage of an indirect TPMS, the loss is recognized and displayed relatively late.

The way in which the tire pressure is displayed is also different. There are variants for the smartphone, using an additional screen, for the integrated on-board system of the car and yourself rearview mirror with built-in TPMS display are available.

Tip: If you have the tire change carried out in your workshop, you should inform them whether your vehicle has a direct or indirect measuring system. With the direct TPMS, the mechanic has to relearn the sensors of your car for safety reasons.

Retrofitting the TPMS - how does it work?

What does it cost to retrofit a tire pressure monitor?

There are various systems on the market that can be used to retrofit older vehicles with a TPMS. TPMS systems can already be retrofitted for less than 100 euros. Original sensors from the manufacturer, on the other hand, are only available for those models that are available from the factory with a TPMS system. Many rim manufacturers now offer their own sensors. The tire trade also has its own solutions. One of the retrofitting options starts with the valve, for example. The TireMoni TM-150 system is intended for models without a standard tire pressure control.

Tip: It is important to pay attention to this when a tire change is due for a tire with TPMS.

The kit costs just under 100 euros and is very easy to install: originals valve caps you swap for those with a radio sensor, which are then connected to a mini computer via Bluetooth. The computer screen shows you the precise pressures and tire temperatures; in the event of a pressure drop, the device warns loudly and quickly. With the other retrofit systems, internal sensors are installed - as with a manufacturer's solution. This is more complex and expensive because the tire has to be removed for it.
