The Geneva Motor Show (March 8-18, 2018) has shown that nothing new is really to be expected in terms of body shapes and drive technology at the moment. However, the situation is significantly different in the area of the rims, where even extremely striking specimens are available ex works. We thought that everything had been shown in the past few decades, but that's definitely not the case. The design studios of the manufacturers but also of the third-party providers seem to be well equipped with creative minds.
Smaller, the rims probably no longer
Not really a surprise, but there will hardly be a manufacturer in the future that presents a new model on smaller rims compared to its predecessor. A Mercedes-Maybach S-Class (X222) has at least 20 inches and if you look at the Maybach study, there are even 24 inches. In view of the 6 m length, the whole thing doesn't even seem oversized. The situation is no different with the BMW X7 Concept (on 305/40 R23 slippers), the planned AUDI Q8 or the Atlas Coupe Concept from the Volkswagen group.
We see more and more closed rims. Fully clad wheels are particularly popular on electric cars. Of course there is a reason. The missing spokes reduce the formation of eddies, which in turn generate air resistance. This has a negative impact on the range of an electric car and one would like to avoid that. ABT Sportsline tuner also supports this thesis. The company showed for the first time with the new John Olsson Audi RS6 + and a modified FR ABT Sportsline alloy rim complete with ring from the formula E a wheel in a particularly exclusive look. Partially or completely closed rims are certainly a trend, which already has many fans due to its futuristic look.

But closed rims also have disadvantages. The cooling of the brake system is reduced. So the bumper needs larger air inlets to deliver enough fresh air to the brakes. In addition, it also urgently needs an indicator for worn brake pads. If this is not installed, you have to remove the bike regularly to find out the current condition. On the other hand, finding a car spare parts shop that has the right components in stock is child's play. However, you hardly have to clean the rims because almost no brake dust gets on the wheel.

There have always been black or silver rims. In contrast to the past few years, this certain “colorlessness” is more in trend again. There are still many bright, colorful rims, but the trend is currently towards the monochrome look. From the factory, you will hardly find a vehicle that does not offer a wheel set in a classic black-silver paint finish.
