Traffic alarm and warning of speed cameras: the Saphe Drive Mini in the test!

When it comes to usability and technology, lies saphe with its color display in its speed camera detector in our opinion before everyone else. It also increases user-friendliness and functionality. The new big one color display between the two keys (same principle as the Saphe One+), is an excellent one Upgrade to the previous model. The smart traffic alarm not only informs the driver via a display, but also with warning tones speed cameras, mobile speed cameras and others speed measurements, but also about Accidents and hazards on the chosen route. In addition, the Saphe Drive Mini even has a "impact sensor" and one "Smart Alarm". The latter is particularly practical in areas where many radar measuring systems are installed and speed measurements are frequently carried out. As soon as the "Smart Alarm" is switched on, and man traveling at the permitted speed the device does not emit an alarm tone, only a single one beep. However, if the speed limit is exceeded, the alarm will sound as usual.

All functions are handled via the database of Blitzer.de. A total of over 11 million drivers from all over Europe use this system. As with the previous model, the Drive Mini starts automatically as soon as your own smartphone is nearby and successfully connects to the Saphe Drive Mini. The Saphe Drive Mini fits in almost every cockpit and is very easy to attach. You have the option of gluing the device to the dashboard using the plastic bracket, or, and this is our favourite, you can simply attach the small screen to the air vent fixture using the bracket provided. This means that the device fits into almost any interior, unless you are using a VW Phaeton hidden air vents drives, as in our video embedded below. The practical helper can be flexibly removed and stays in place while driving without jerking. But we have also found a position in the Phaeton.

Big advantage: easy charging thanks to USB!

With the cheaper versions of the Saphe traffic alarm, the batteries have to be replaced every few months. The Drive Mini has a more sustainable solution. Although the little speed camera detector lasts quite a long time (about 5 months), it will eventually run out of juice. And if that happens, it can be easily recharged via USB in a very short time (2-3 hours). And that even while driving in the vehicle via the cigarette lighter, for example. That means no effort and no additional costs.

legally a “grey area”

To make it short: Basically, the use of the traffic alarm is highly recommended. The more the driver is informed about hazards on his route, the better he can prevent them. However, the active use a speed camera detector or a corresponding app in Germany and in many other European countries verboten. According to paragraph 23 paragraph 1c while driving no speed camera app can be used. If the police notices this during a check, they have to pay a whopping €75. Therefore, the traffic alarm is best activate and the speed camera warning function deactivate. However, there is a loophole in the law: as long as the Co-driver uses the speed camera app and the device, e.g. it is in the passenger’s handbag, and only verbally conveys the information to the driver, the use of the speed camera detector is legal.

Update: The legal situation for the passenger has changed. There is more information about this HERE
