Save gas with chip tuning: 6 tips on how it works!

Gas prices are going crazy! Refueling has been getting more and more expensive for years. No wonder everyone is talking about ECO tuning. With ECO tuning, the engine performance should remain the same and with lower fuel consumption. Methods such as chip tuning are used for this. But what is chip tuning anyway and how can I save gas with chip tuning? We have put together a few tips for you.

Save gasoline is a good thing. Not only because it saves us money, but also because we are committed to sustainability. If we use less gasoline, we conserve resources and make our contribution to reducing carbon dioxide.

What types of chip tuning are there?

There are several ways to do chip tuning. Below we present three tips on how chip tuning really works.

1. Reprogramming of the chip

  • You have to imagine this variant as a new installation of your PC. The data from the existing chip is loaded onto an external device thanks to an interface. The software is reprogrammed on this external device and then loaded back onto the chip. The cost of this variant is around 1000 €. However, you should really leave the reprogramming in the hands of experts, as it is all too easy to go wrong.

2. Install new chip

  • On cars built before 1999, reprogramming the chip is not possible because the interface is missing. A new chip must be installed on these vehicles. This should really only be done by professionals. Because if the chip is used incorrectly, in the worst case there can be engine damage.

3. Insert tuning box

  • There is the possibility of building a tuning box in front of the actual control unit, which manipulates the data and thus reduces fuel consumption, for example. This method has the risk that the actual control unit also has a protective function that is overridden in the tuning box.
  • Keep in mind that chip tuning is only legal if you can present a valid test certificate and enter the change. You should also make sure that the emission class does not change as a result of the chip tuning.
  • This can lead to a recalculation of the vehicle tax. And thus to hefty additional payments or even to proceedings for tax evasion. If you are taken out of circulation with an illegal chip tuning, you are threatened not just a fine, but also the immediate immobilization of your vehicle.
  • It is therefore important to only have chip tuning carried out by serious experts. You can recognize them by the fact that they comply with legal requirements at all times and also point out risks.

How can you save even more gas – 6 tips?

Chip tuning fans promise that you can save up to 15 percent of your fuel consumption thanks to ECO tuning. That sounds very promising, doesn't it? You can save even more by following these tricks. In addition to chip tuning, there are other ways to reduce the fuel consumption of your vehicle. You can use it to determine how high your probable fuel consumption is petrol calculators on the internet calculate.

Trick 1: Compare gas station prices!

  • Do you always drive to the same gas station near your home because you are used to it? Then it's time to change habits. Because you can really save gravel if you compare the prices of the gas stations with each other. You should also get into the habit of refueling between 17 p.m. and 20 p.m. Because at this time the fuel price is usually the cheapest.

Trick 2: Drive efficiently!

  • You can save fuel by driving efficiently. The basic rule here is that you drive in the highest possible gear whenever possible. In built-up areas, for example, you can drive your vehicle at 50 km/h in fifth gear.
  • In addition, you can drive with foresight by allowing your car to gently coast to a halt as if at a red light. If possible, avoid stepping on the gas pedal, because that really eats up gas.

Trick 3: Lose weight!

  • When driving, such a vehicle has to carry a lot of weight around with it. Every extra kilo that is packed on it swallows petrol. As a basic rule, it can be said that about 100 kilos more means 0,4 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. That's quite a lot. So the motto is: Get rid of everything that is not absolutely necessary.

Trick 4: Avoid air resistance!

  • Fuel can also be saved by reducing air resistance. A roof rack, for example, swallows 2 liters per 100 kilometers. So don't use it unless you absolutely need it.

Trick 5: Pay attention to the tire pressure!

  • If you drive too little on the tires with 0,5 bar alone, you will consume around 5 percent more fuel on average. So it pays to always keep an eye on the tire pressure.

Trick 6: Reduce power consumption in the car

  • There are many amenities in your car that increase gas mileage. This includes devices such as air conditioning, radio, navigation system and heating. Always turn off these devices when not in use. This way you save gas and avoid stress about high gas prices.
