The rescue service Heidenheim-Ulm gGmbH of the German Red Cross relies on a converted Setra intercity bus to support the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. The Setra MultiClass S 415 LE business is used as a large-capacity intensive care vehicle (G-ITW) for the transfer of COVID-19 patients. Axel Stokinger, Head of Sales Organization Germany, handed over the special vehicle to David Richter, Managing Director of the DRK rescue service in Heidenheim, on May 18, 2021 in the presence of Till Oberwörder, Head of Daimler Buses, and Manfred Lucha, Minister for Social Affairs, Health and Integration Baden-Württemberg -Ulm.
Large-capacity intensive care transport trolley
The 12,3 meter long low-floor bus, which was converted into a special vehicle by a team at the Daimler Buses plant in Neu-Ulm in just six weeks, is now equipped with four fully equipped intensive care spaces. With it, the German Red Cross in Ulm can react quickly and relocate intensive care patients to other hospitals if necessary. On board the large intensive care vehicle are intensive care physicians as well as emergency and paramedics from the DRK rescue service Heidenheim-Ulm gGmbH.
Professional medical equipment for the special vehicle
The former demonstration car, which had 43 seats before the conversion, is equipped with, among other things, four electro-hydraulic stretchers with a loading system. Also on board are four intensive care ventilators, four monitoring monitors, a sonography and a blood gas analyzer - the patients can be positioned in different positions during the transport. Together with the Daimler Buses development department, the production employees were able to create additional space for seven companion seats as well as maximum storage space for sufficient medication, care utensils, additional oxygen devices and protective clothing. In order to ensure optimal cleaning and disinfection of the vehicle interior, the bus is equipped with a specially coated and level floor. The side windows of the S 415 LE business, which is equipped with a blue light and a signal horn, are covered with privacy film.
Extra protection for driver and companion
In addition to the efficient installation of the ultra-modern medical equipment, the implementation of the extensive hygiene measures played a decisive role in the renovation. A disinfection and nebulizer can be used in the patient room after the patient has been transported. The area for the driver and additional companions is hermetically separated from the patient room by a wall, and the ventilation system has been modified accordingly. The large-capacity intensive care vehicle is primarily available for the intensive care transport system of the state of Baden-Württemberg and can also be used for supra-regional and cross-border transports.
Fight against COVID-19: Special vehicles from the Neu-Ulm plant
In April 2020, Daimler Buses converted a first large-capacity intensive care vehicle based on a Mercedes-Benz Citaro at the Neu-Ulm location. The next special expansion followed in November 2020: a Setra S 416 LE business intercity bus became a mobile COVID-19 test station for Huber Group Holding SE in just four weeks. The first vaccination bus based on an S 2021 LE business from Setra MultiClass followed in spring 415. The current large-capacity intensive care vehicle is thus the fourth special vehicle from the Daimler Buses plant in Neu-Ulm. Two more mobile vaccination buses are currently under renovation.
