Simulations are used in many different industries today, mostly to minimize security risk. You can therefore find them in driving schools or during pilot training. Simulations are also being used more and more frequently to analyze technical systems. But of course they also made their way into the entertainment industry. For example, this is how racing game simulators came about and some of them are surprisingly realistic. But simulators like Gran Turismo or Forza Horizon really replicate the driving feel of a real vehicle?

Digital motorsport and its increasing popularity!

There is a real hype about racing games at the moment. Motorsport has been popular since its inception and only seems to be getting more popular. This is probably due primarily to technical progress in recent years, which allows racing vehicles to perform even more impressively. Another indicator of the popularity of the sport is the number of motorsport bets that are placed daily at online bookmakers. Almost all good online bookmakers for sports betting now also have a motorsport category, in which all major races are represented.

With technological progress and the increasing degree of digitization, it is no wonder that motorsport is also becoming more and more digital. There are a variety of racing games and, for some years now, so-called sim racing. This is virtual motorsport, in which realistic races are simulated on the PC or on a game console. Popular games in this category are Gran Turismo and Forza Horizons. Of course, this raises the question of how well such simulators can actually reproduce the driving experience.

How realistic is Gran Turismo?

Gran Turismo is a series of racing games based on the Playstation consoles can be played. There are different modes for the game. It can be played in arcade mode and is then assigned more to the genre of racing games. However, if you play in professional GT mode, the game is a racing simulation. But how realistic is this simulation? The Gran Turismo games recreate the look and performance of a wide variety of vehicles, most of which are licensed replicas of real-world automobiles. The Gran Turismo Sport version also features the latest in vehicle physics simulation, incorporating insights from both the real and virtual worlds.

How realistic is Forza Horizon 5?

Forza Horizon is a so-called open-world racing game for the Xbox 360. This series of games is not so easy to classify in terms of genre. Technically, Forza Horizon is more of an arcade game with some simulation aspects. Forza Motorsport goes more in the direction of simulation, but actually it's a mixture of simulation and arcade game. Therefore, the physics simulation cannot be compared to that of Grand Turismo, for example. Both games offer an excellent, realistic racing experience. However, Gran Turismo appears to be the more serious sim racer, making it better suited for players looking to improve their lap times. Forza Horizon, on the other hand, offers the more entertaining driving experience and leaves more room for error.

The currently best simulations on the market

Gran Turismo and Forza Horizons are far from the only realistic racing games on the market. The best current sim racers seem to be Dirt Rally 2.0, iRacing and Assetto Corsa, all based on the same physics. With technological advances, these simulators will soon be able to make the driving experience even more realistic. The Munich developer Competition Company has announced a new sim racer called “Rennsport”. The developer announced that he wanted to take virtual racing to the next level of evolution.
