On the occasion of the opening of the soccer World Cup, the vehicle experts from Autodoc published an evaluation that documents the vehicle ownership of the world's best soccer players. This shows which car models, brands and vehicle classes footballers drive. The long-term research includes a total of hundreds of current and former national soccer players from 45 nations and their preferred vehicles. During the evaluation, a connection was established between the vehicle class and the player's position in the team.
Fast players love fast cars: Midfield and Sturm show a preference for sports cars
- Forwards and midfielders prefer to drive sports cars.
- The Grand Tourer is the vehicle of choice for defenders and goalies.
- The three most popular car brands of the world's best kickers are Mercedes, Ferrari and Range Rover.
After an analysis of 305 soccer players and their cars, astonishing correlations between player position and preferred vehicle model are revealed. Accordingly, strikers and midfielders apparently prefer sports cars. 38% of the attackers studied own a sports car, including Antoine Griezmann (McLaren 675LT), João Félix (Ferrari 488 GTB) and Robert Lewandowski (Ferrari F12 Berlinetta). Sports cars are only more popular among midfielders, where almost every second player in this position drives a sporty speedster, including Leon Goretzka (Mercedes AMG V8 Biturbo) and Mario Götze (Mercedes SL 500). The brands Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche are particularly popular.
Wide in the goal and wide on the road: goalkeepers and defense prefer Grand Tourers
It is noticeable that many of the world's best goalkeepers prefer to travel in grand tourers or SUVs. A total of 36% of the goalkeepers surveyed drive SUVs, including Danish Kasper Schmeichel, who usually drives a Range Rover Sport, and Wojciech Szczęsny from Poland with his Porsche Cayenne Lumma Design. Another 44% own a grand tourer, like Manuel Neuer, who drives an Audi RS6. Unlike their attacking and midfield colleagues, goalkeepers hardly seem to care much about sports cars. Only 4% of the goalkeepers surveyed drive sports cars.
Large vehicles are also preferred in defense. 36% of the defenders drive SUVs, including Dutchman Virgil van Dijk (Mercedes-AMG G63), Frenchman Theo Hernandez (Lamborghini Urus) and Croatian Dejan Lovren (Mercedes GLE Coupe). 37% prefer grand tourers, such as Jordan Henderson from England (Audi RS7) and the Swiss Ricardo Rodriguez (Porsche Panamera Turbo S). Only one in five of the world's best defenders drives a sports car, like legend John Terry, whose Ferrari collection is crowned by a Ferrari 275 GTB valued at over two million euros.
Mercedes is by far the most popular car brand among footballers
The evaluation makes it clear that Mercedes is by far the most popular car brand among the top international players. Of the 305 athletes analyzed, a total of 71 players drive Mercedes vehicles. The most popular are the Mercedes G-Class G63 AMG and Mercedes C63 AMG models, each driven by five players. The most popular car model, on the other hand, is the Bentley Continental GT. A total of 24 players drive the model, which has a price of 215.000 euros and upwards. 11 players with Bentley come from England. The Land Rover model Range Rover Sport in different versions, which 21 of the evaluated players own, is also extremely popular with footballers. The most popular brands among German top players are Audi and Mercedes.

- Sources: All information about players' vehicle ownership has been researched using newspapers, magazines, social media profiles, fan club information, forum posts and other public sources. The research period was approximately five years. For players who own several cars, the most valuable/most expensive car model was taken into account in the evaluation.
