A speed camera can often be expensive, so no wonder nobody is happy about a ticket or even points. Nevertheless, speed traps make sense at neuralgic points: for example in front of retirement homes, kindergartens or schools. But are permanently installed speed traps really the reason for safer road traffic? Or do they only ring the municipal coffers? We mostly bet on the latter. But what happens when a speeder "unofficially”, i.e. by ordinary citizens, is flashed? Great Britain sees itself as a pioneer in this matter with an app, but it doesn't seem to be that easy, because the app developers are now being massively threatened.
Anti-speeding app has become a risk for the developers
The name of this now infamous app is Speedcam Anywhere, and is a huge talking point on the British Isles. Thanks to the app, every user can turn their cell phone or tablet into a portable one speedometer transform. All that is needed for this is a short video of the supposedly "speeding" vehicle. The speed driven is then automatically calculated by the app. For this purpose, the film is fed into the developer's cloud and processed using AI (artificial intelligence) examined. The results are then sent to the user via email. Data such as that determined are included Speed, the Locality like the one to be observed at this point speed limit. Additional info such as the impact of speed on air quality, pedestrian accidents at that location, and the probable one Braking distance, will be supplied at the same time.
License plate leads to determination of the car type!
The app stands out as a real all-rounder, since the license plate can also be used to infer the type of car, the brand and even the year of construction. However, the operators of the software point out on their homepage that Speedcam Anywhere neither saves nor records the license plate number. The personal data of the vehicle owner also allegedly remain untouched. The primary task of the app is to collect data and evidence of traffic violations, similar to a Dashcam, and not to act as a "real" speed camera. Thus, such a data collection alone is sufficient not fromto issue actual speeding tickets or fines. The app should only be understood as a warning. The actual investigation is also left exclusively to the local police in these cases, and this is also pointed out on the homepage.
App Speedcam Anywhere "disgusts drivers"!
However, some British citizens fear that there will be numerous speed denunciations. Therefore they are little of this kind"the proof" enthused. However, according to the Guardian newspaper, for a number of years it has been common practice for British police to rely on traffic crime footage that is available online, and this too count as evidence. There is currently an aggressive and hostile mood in this regard, which can be seen in the negative comments and threats in the App Store. which is why the development team prefers to keep their data private. There are even comparisons to the Stasi in the GDR, another says: "This app disgusts me." Incidentally, the app can only be used in the UK, but the USA is already checking for a corresponding release.
Of course, that wasn't the end of it!

It's time for the legal situation in Germany to be adjusted and the app to be usable. Then simply attach the smartphone to a tree in a play street (traffic-calmed area) with a power bank and then transfer the data to the public order office in the evening. Let's see how long it will take until no one races through the play street anymore. Either way, the app is a total win! *thumps up for the developers*
I tried them out in Germany and would have cleaned up the municipal budget completely in one day.
