Enlightenment - flap exhaust legal or not? The information!

Lately, there has been a lot of talk about flap exhaust systems and sport exhaust systems, and we would like to inform you about the most important things about the approval and the general conditions of this topic. Which things are banned and what do you have to consider when building an exhaust yourself? It depends on whether it should be a flap exhaust system, or a normal, consistent exhaust, which does not change its volume in order to obtain road legal approval for the exhaust. In social media, there was always the rumor that flap exhaust systems were generally banned, this is not the case. The legal framework has been tightened in recent years, however, and the possibilities of individual acceptance of an exhaust system by the TÜV auditors were drastically reduced.

2016 - Reform of the Noise Measurement Ordinance

It is necessary that the exhaust system comply with the driving noise and the stationary noise. The driving noise is prescribed by EU regulation and is between 74 and 75 decibels, and there is differentiated between old and new cars and between cars and trucks. It is important for tuners that in the year 2016 has a reform of the noise measurement regulation against. Before 2016 it was possible to measure the driving noise between 50 and 60 km / h by giving full throttle in third gear, mostly at 3.750 revolutions per minute. This means that the flap exhaust systems were allowed to be loud up to 45 km / h and then had to be quieter from the driving sound measurement. However, the exhaust systems were allowed to be louder again at higher speeds.

Up until 2016, it was still possible to have a flap exhaust system registered by individual approval. But don't worry, old systems that have already been entered remain valid. However, systems installed later (flap exhaust systems) are no longer legal and many manufacturers therefore had to switch to an EC approval. EC approval is the last resort that is legally offered to manufacturers of aftermarket car exhaust systems. Since then, this means that a control unit has always been installed, which complies with the driving noise and the stationary noise that is stated in the vehicle registration document, regardless of the driving mode and exhaust flap mode in which you are currently moving. For example, with the old Ford Mustang from 2015, which was still measured according to the old specification, the specification for the EC approval is that the driving noise can be maintained between 50 and 60 km/h, and the stationary noise may also exceed the 87 Do not exceed decibels. You always have to have a reduction in volume at 3.750 revolutions per minute so that the car is stationary and Driving noise measurement is not too loud.

Which ABE options are available for flap exhaust systems?

A classic ABE from the KBA for Germany is not provided for damper systems. One has only one possibility of EC-type approval, or a noise measurement according to the new noise measurement method for US vehicles. But that is also the point, which is why the exhaust systems are so expensive because an EC approval fills entire file folders, and the controller and the flap also have their price. It is an unbelievable bureaucratic effort to make a flap exhaust system street legal, which is why a good and legal exhaust system is not available under 2.500-3.000 Euro. Any offer below this price limit is not recommended and often either unserious or the manufacturer has not yet discovered the sense of economic work and he should probably soon be broke.

What needs to be fulfilled to achieve a steady noise increase? As part of a single acceptance of a sports exhaust system without flap, it is still possible in individual cases, to get a registration. This can also raise the noise level, because there is a tolerance value of 5 decibels there. However, it is no longer possible to achieve a noise level increase in new damper exhaust systems, as an EC-approved system must comply with the volume specified by the manufacturer in the vehicle registration compulsory. Only with systems with flap, which were installed before the deadline, a Standgeräuscherhung can still be legally achieved. An EC-approved system is actually not intended to be registered in the vehicle registration, some TÜV inspectors enter it, but it makes no legal difference whether you have registered them, or if you carry the note with the EC approval ,

As soon as you change other things on the vehicle, you have to apply for a complete acceptance, for example, if you change manifold and air filter. But there are not really many legal alternatives on the market here. Here it is so that one makes a combination report, whereby the noise values are measured in connection with the exhaust system. And if you're lucky, the limits are met very quickly. If not, the effort, the effort and the money were in vain. You can even measure the result with a dB meter. But keep your fingers off cheap deals. If you want the right value, a calibrated measuring device is essential. In terms of price, however, it is easy to move with good db measuring devices in the four-digit range.

Of course that had not been the case.
