Possible causes & solutions when the brake squeaks!

If the brakes on the car squeak, then you should first visit a workshop. Because the brakes enable a safer journey. A layman will hardly be able to judge where exactly the noises come from when braking. In principle, this should be left to a specialist workshop. And that is not automatically expensive, because noisy brakes do not always mean that the brake system is defective. Below is some information on squeaky car brakes.

Possible cause of squeaky brakes!

Possible causes & solutions when the brake squeaks!

Brakes that are worn don't usually grind or squeak. Dirt and dust on the brakes, on the other hand, are a much more common cause of squeaky brakes. Squeaking noises can also be caused by improperly fitting brake pads. Or, if the car is standing for a longer period of time, then deposited dust causes and rust there is also a squeaking noise on the brakes. Brakes that are badly rusted can also cause a squeaking noise. Rust on the brakes occurs when the brakes are not used regularly.

If the vehicle is left standing for a long time, rust will sometimes appear on the brakes after just a few minutes. But even with electric cars, rust develops particularly quickly. In electric cars, the engine brake is usually used for braking. If the mechanical brakes on these vehicles are not used at least every few days, rust will develop and the brakes will squeal.

If there is rust, it is advisable to break in the brakes carefully by gently braking. Thus, the brake discs and pads clean themselves by wearing away foreign matter on the brakes, and the squeak often goes away. An additional cleaning agent is actually superfluous in this respect. However, it should also be considered that a rusted brake can result in a longer braking distance.

So if the vehicle has been standing for a long period of time, braking should ideally be carried out at a particularly low speed in a parking lot or on private property. And light braking when running in the brakes also applies if the pads have just been changed. Unless it is absolutely necessary, emergency braking should be avoided completely in these cases. Because only light braking allows the material to optimally get used to the existing braking system and to cope with the temperatures.

Other causes of squeaky brakes

If the brake pads of the brake system have just been changed, it is quite possible that the brakes will squeak. However, the squeaking often results from an installation error. When installing, zinc paste / assembly paste (also called anti-squeak paste) should be used. And if the new brake pads have not been ground properly before installation, then they cannot nestle against the existing brake discs and squeaking may also occur. But even after hard braking, a squeaking noise can occur. The brake system overheats, so that the brake shoes glaze and the brake disc may warp due to the heat. In these cases, all defective parts must be replaced.

Conclusion on the cause of squeaky brakes

Squeaking brakes can have numerous causes. A workshop should definitely be consulted to find out exactly what caused the noise and ultimately eliminate it. Because even a significant defect in the brake system can cause a squeaking noise, so it is better not to be on the road with it. With a defective brake system you endanger yourself and above all others. In most cases, however, the squeaking is due to a minor cause. summary information:

  • Various causes ensure that natural vibrations (squeaking) occur on the brakes
  • Squeaking can (but doesn't have to) affect the safety of the vehicle
  • possible causes: worn brake pads, dirt deposits, the installation of incorrect spare parts
  • If the squeaking does not go away on its own or if there is a loss of braking power, then you must have the brakes checked in a specialist workshop
(Even if you hear metallic rubbing, the pads are usually worn, which can be heard using the brake wear indicator)
  • Brake discs in good condition do not need to be replaced.
  • The brake pads should always be changed axis by axis (both sides of an axis) take place.
  • Rough pricing
    – Brake pads (per axle) 40 to 250 euros
    – Workload (per axis) 60 to 200 euros
    – Total costs for brake pads (per axle) 100 to 450 euros
  • Disc brakes can get dirty, causing vibrations that can be heard as squeaks. (The cause can be, for example, brake dust, pollen, road salt residues, rust film). This can be solved by braking hard on an open road. Alternatively, braking when reversing.
  • If a small stone gets caught between the heat shield and the brake disc or the brake caliper and the brake disc, this can also cause a squeak.
  • Incorrect assembly / bad components can also cause squeaking.
  • Only OEM-quality components approved by the manufacturer should be installed.
  • Brake pads and brake discs can "glaze" under particularly heavy loads and therefore squeak. Then the glazed components must be replaced with new parts.
  • A tight brake caliper can also cause a squeak.
