These are basically pick-ups that are lowered with large rims and wide tires equipped and increased performance become. A street truck conversion in Germany can become problematic when the vehicles are strong increased performance and therefore it may no longer be possible to comply with the regulations in the areas of emissions and noise levels. With a legal increase in performance However, this is not a problem and is identical to any other vehicle. After all, the engines are often identical to a car.

Often times you can typical wheel / tire combinations with low profile tires for a street truck, however not are used due to load capacity, scope, etc. The search for a legal solution is much more difficult here - but not impossible - than with conventional cars. The "real street trucks“After lowering, it is often too low to be legal in this country. We are consciously talking about the blatant changes in the American scene. A lowering by means of Sports suspension or sports springs is relatively unproblematic.

As in most cases, a test engineer should discuss what is and what is not permitted before the conversion. Otherwise there can be high costs for Individual acceptances or even the refusal of the entry.

Which vehicles are suitable for the conversion and what is particularly popular?

In principle, any pickup is suitable for converting to a street truck. However, so-called "Work trucks"Or"Heavy Duty"Trucks less for the conversion, since the focus on power and performance is on the road and the vehicles mentioned are heavier and less aerodynamic than" normal "pickups. But it is still possible. But vehicles with a “single cab”, ie a driver's cab with two doors and, if possible, only one bench seat and one “short bed”, ie one, are particularly popular short loading area. These pickups are from the factory relatively light and are therefore more suitable for conversion. Also there are usually more accessories than, for example, for a Ford F-250 to make a street truck on.

What makes up the conversions are mostly large rims with fat tires and the most radical possible lowering. "Airride chassis" are also very popular, as the ride height can be set here as desired. The vehicles are often painted in striking colors and have chrome-plated panels. Since the increase in performance is often in the foreground, entire body kits consisting of spoiler lips, front splitters and rear spoilers are often attached. Basically, a street truck conversion brings with it similar components that you would also install on a sporty coupé for tuning, for example. Since the factory engines can usually also be found in sedans and sports cars, these can also be tuned almost identically. The best example is the one presented recently 2021 AWD Syclone® V8 with 750 PS based on GMC Canyon. He definitely feels uncomfortable in the field and is a Street truck. Even if not radically lowered by means of Airride!

Advantages and disadvantages of a renovation

The advantages are one improved road holding due to the lowering and the wider tires, which can lead to more safety, especially with pickups, and which optimization of the engines, as the vehicles are designed to perform on the road.

The major disadvantage of such a conversion is that in most cases the vehicles are their Lose abilityto be able to drive in unpaved terrain. In addition, the chassis components are subjected to unusually heavy loads. The utility value is less or hardly available.

  1. Thank you for this post about the pick-up for street truck conversion. Good to know that most vehicles lose their ability to drive off-road when they are converted to street trucks. I would also like to have some accessories built into my pick-up, but avoid that it can no longer drive off-road.

How stupid you can be ... Buy an off-road vehicle with a loading area and build it so that none of it can be used anymore ... The only purpose is to pollute the environment, to see how limited and egoistic humanity is. It is only thought about when it is too late before it is just uncomfortable, the climate is getting worse and worse and there are actually still people who drive around with such a stupid sling ...

  3. My uncle recently had his pickup truck converted. Very interesting to read a little more about the process, as I was very fascinated by the big change. For him it was also a legal increase in performance, as he would also like to use the truck for his work without any problems.
