At the beginning of April, spring is in full swing and it's time for the spring again tire change. The winter tires can be removed to make room for the summer tires. But why is this actually necessary? The Automobile Club of Germany (AvD) lists four clear points: better control of the vehicle – the braking distance is reduced – tire wear is reduced in summer – fuel consumption is reduced. Doesn't sound bad. But before you do the tire change, you should consider the following things:
- Is the existing tire tread sufficient? The legal minimum profile is 1,6 millimeters.
- If you want to be on the safe side, according to the Auto Club Europa (ACE), however at least 3 millimeters residual profile required.
- It is important not only to check the profile, but also to examine the tire for any damage and cracks. In addition, should tire pressure checked - the necessary information on the air pressure can be found in the manual or sometimes on the frame of the driver's door or the fuel filler flap.
Finally some information: According to the ADAC, 10 years is the top "age limit' for car tires. As the tire's rubber compound hardens over the years, grip and braking distance suffer on wet roads with old tyres. A change is even better from the age of 8.
