The car is becoming more important again for young people

Representative study: Corona has made the car more important overall - especially among 18 to 39 year olds. The corona pandemic inevitably encourages people to withdraw into their own four walls. This so-called cocooning can also be observed on the street. As a new representative study by the market research institute Innofact shows, given the pandemic, many people feel much more comfortable in the car than in public transport and are therefore increasingly using it. Particularly noticeable: the trend towards own four wheels is most pronounced among 18 to 39 year olds. For the study commissioned by Kia, 2020 drivers from all over Germany were surveyed online in December 1.000.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 27 percent of those surveyed have increasingly used the car to avoid trips on public transport. Among the 18 to 39 year olds it is even 37 percent. In addition, use has changed, said 39 percent of all participants on the record. In the younger generation, this was the case for more than half (51 percent). They stated that they are increasingly using the car for journeys that they would otherwise have taken on public transport, for example to go shopping (26 percent) or to go to work (24 percent). The changed mobility behavior is also reflected in the length of time the vehicle is used: Despite the restrictions in public life and increasing work in the home office, 26 percent of those surveyed spend more time in the car than before the pandemic began. Among the 18 to 39-year-olds, this proportion is even 35 percent. Only 19 percent of all participants spend less time in the vehicle than before, with 55 percent the time remained the same.

The car as an oasis of wellbeing

The study also clearly shows what the main reason for the increased use of the car: In view of Corona, more than half of the respondents (53 percent) feel more comfortable in the car today. This is even more the case for 18 to 39 year olds (58 percent). Only 2 percent of all participants feel less comfortable in the car than before the pandemic.

When asked how well-being in the car can be improved, good music comes first (62 percent). Comfortable seats (51 percent) and enough space (46 percent) as well as the opportunity to enjoy peace and quiet (47 percent) are also very important. Exactly the same factors also count for the 18 to 39 year olds, but they are consistently even more important to them (music: 74 percent; seats: 60 percent; space: 52 percent; rest: 53 percent). The trend of cocooning on four wheels also fits that 24 percent of all respondents - and 39 percent of the younger ones - have bought things since the beginning of the pandemic that beautify the interior of their car or make it more comfortable. Most often it was about a pleasant room fragrance, followed by functional and comfort-enhancing elements through to decorative accessories.
