Tire approval for two-wheelers

For a long time, there was a so-called manufacturer relationship with motorcycles. This means that no other tires than those specially produced by the manufacturer of the machine are allowed on the rims. In the meantime, this regulation has been lifted, but a tire approval is required for this, which must always be carried.

Changes since 2019

The test bar was raised a bit by TÜV in 2019. Because, should a tire assembly take place with a different size than the one registered, a safety check is sufficient no longer off. The motorcyclist must now go to the test center and have an expert report drawn up there. Failure to do so will immediately invalidate the two-wheeler's operating license. Most motorcyclists don't see this as a security check, but rather as a rip-off.

According to the current regulation, the clearance certificate must be divided into two separate certificates: The Manufacturer certificate and the Service information. The latter refers to tires with documented Tire type and size. The former on all deviating Models. The manufacturer's certificate serves as the basis for the exemption application in the vehicle documents. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that this will succeed.

Tire approval for normal cars

In fact, a tire is approved for a car not that complicated like a motorcycle. Because, despite the meticulous information about the tire size, the driver is not tied to it. Since 2005 a "Certificate of Conformity" (CoC) to be handed over with. Everyone is here alternatively mountable tire types noted for the respective vehicle. Exceptional cases: If the preferred tire is neither entered in the CoC papers nor in the actual vehicle papers, an additional report is required. Pirelli requires separate tire approval for motorcycles and cars!

Unfortunately, Pirelli does not offer a direct online model. Manufacturer certification or tire approval must be applied for in writing. The best thing to do is to get in touch via a form or by email. If the following key data are submitted with the initial request, the process will be accelerated:

• Vehicle manufacturer & model (vehicle registration document field D.1)
• Vehicle class (vehicle registration document field D.2)
• First registration (vehicle registration document, field B)
• Power in kW (vehicle registration document, fields P.2 and P.4)
• Maximum speed (vehicle registration document field T)
• Permissible load for the front and rear axles (vehicle registration document, fields 7.1 and 7.2)
